Star Wars has become such a huge part of our culture – with nine movies, countless books, TV shows, and cartoons – that it feels like it’s always been with us. Having watched and enjoyed Star Wars my whole life, I’ve always been struck by the sheer variety of fighting styles it presents.
While blasters and speeder bikes are popular in the Star Wars universe, the lightsaber remains the most iconic weapon. Many games have tried to capture the experience of wielding a lightsaber, with mixed results.
I’ve been really impressed with some of these Star Wars games, honestly. They’ve all found really fun and creative ways to let you experience lightsaber battles over the years – it’s like the Force is guiding the developers!
10. Star Wars Episode One: Jedi Power Battles
Arcade-Style Madness

The marketing for Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace wasn’t just a typical movie campaign—it was a massive, all-out effort to maximize profits from George Lucas’s first prequel. While some of the tie-in video games were actually quite good, even the poorly made ones had a certain amusing quality.
Jedi Power Battles remains one of the most enjoyable Star Wars games I’ve ever played. It feels a lot like an arcade game – easy to pick up, but with surprising depth, just like the classics you’d spend all your quarters on.
Lightsaber battles in this game aren’t about perfect technique – they’re more wild and energetic. But it works! The fun factor is so high, any lack of realism is easily forgiven. If you enjoyed the lightsaber fights from the Star Wars prequels, this game will definitely bring back good memories.
9. Star Wars: Obi-Wan
Hello, There
When Star Wars: Obi-Wan was announced as an Xbox exclusive back in May 2001, it felt like a win for those of us who’d bought the original Xbox at launch. Looking back now, I’m amazed by how well the game still plays, and it’s strange to remember Microsoft securing a completely new, exclusive Star Wars title when the franchise was being released on so many different platforms.
The Star Wars: Obi-Wan game was innovative for its time, using the right analog stick to control the lightsaber. While it might not sound like much now, I was recently surprised by how naturally the controls still felt. It definitely wasn’t perfect, but it was a lot of fun to play.
Obi-Wan tells the story of the Jedi’s early years, starting before and continuing throughout the events of The Phantom Menace. It follows his journey from an unknown student to a highly skilled Padawan. Beyond the exciting lightsaber battles, the game features a surprisingly strong narrative and well-crafted cutscenes for its time.
8. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
Yes, A LEGO Game
It’s surprising, but the LEGO games actually deliver some of the most fun and satisfying lightsaber battles you can find. Just a few minutes playing The Skywalker Saga will prove it – it really nails the action!
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga lets you play through all nine Star Wars saga films – and you can experience them in any order you like! You don’t have to follow the story chronologically; feel free to jump into your favorite film whenever you want.
Like previous LEGO games, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is surprisingly complex beneath its playful, cartoon style. Combat is fast-paced and satisfying, and the game as a whole feels polished and refined.
7. Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi
Crushing Difficulty, Great Lightsaber Combat
Lightsaber battles aren’t limited to 3D games. While there have been many good 2D Star Wars games, Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi truly stands out as the most enjoyable to play.
I have fond memories of playing the Super Star Wars games in the 1990s. Since new Star Wars movies weren’t being made at the time, these games were my way of revisiting the original films.
This exciting three-part game series brilliantly retells the story of the original trilogy, getting more impressive and action-packed with each installment. While you can play as several characters in the final game, Return of the Jedi, Luke Skywalker is the most enjoyable. The game is incredibly fast-paced – a quality many games from that time tried to achieve, but few managed to pull off as well.
6. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
Unleash the Force
Before Disney bought Star Wars in 2012, the stories now known as ‘Legends’ included some really unusual and over-the-top content. A prime example is Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, which began the complex story of Darth Vader’s hidden apprentice, set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.
The Force Unleashed brilliantly showcased the raw power and aggressive potential of lightsabers, letting players unleash incredible destruction. As Starkiller, you can create intensely satisfying chaos, not just with a lightsaber, but also with a variety of Force abilities.
What makes a virtual lightsaber truly exciting is how it feels when it hits something. If that impact doesn’t feel powerful and realistic, the game just won’t capture the spirit of Star Wars. In The Force Unleashed, every swing feels strong, final, and incredibly rewarding.
5. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II
This One Goes to Eleven
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed was an action-packed game that expanded the Star Wars universe, focusing on Darth Vader’s hidden apprentice, Starkiller. The sequel, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II, takes everything up a notch with even more speed and intensity – a common approach for second installments, as George Lucas often observed during filming.
The Force Unleashed II takes everything to the extreme, pushing the limits of the console. The story explores more mature themes, and the lightsaber battles are incredibly engaging – both to play and watch, almost mesmerizing.
The game received updates with new combat styles, including powerful finishing moves, and players can now fight with two lightsabers at once. The Force Unleashed II focuses on making players feel bold and strategic, and its destructive power remains greater than that of most recent Star Wars titles.
4. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
A Metroidvania Soulslike with Lightsabers
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, set five years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, feels like a dream come true for many Star Wars fans. After Disney acquired the franchise, I, like many others, really wanted a Star Wars game with a fresh story, new characters, and satisfying lightsaber combat – and this game delivers.
Cal Kestis has quickly become a standout character in the newer Star Wars stories. He’s inspiring because of his strong will and impressive lightsaber skills.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order’s combat is incredibly dynamic and feels powerful, taking inspiration from popular action games. The lightsaber combat is particularly well-done, creating a truly immersive Star Wars experience that makes you feel like you’re in the movies.
3. Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series
Become Immortal
Almost every child has played with a toy lightsaber, making the iconic humming and swooshing sounds – it’s a classic part of growing up. Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series captures that same feeling, but brings it to life through virtual reality.

I always thought Star Wars and virtual reality were a perfect match. The universe feels so immersive that it naturally lends itself to being experienced in VR. Vader Immortal really showcased this, especially with its lightsaber combat. The accuracy of the controls made it easy to get completely lost in the experience.
I didn’t really think much of VR until I tried Vader Immortal. Being in that world, wielding a lightsaber to block shots and fight intense battles, is easily one of the best gaming moments I’ve ever had.
2. Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
Kyle Katarn is Love, Kyle Katarn is Life
After Disney acquired Star Wars in 2012, the character Kyle Katarn was moved to the ‘Legends’ storyline, meaning he’s no longer considered part of the official canon. While there’s been occasional talk of bringing him back, the witty mercenary and sometimes-Jedi remains outside the main Star Wars universe for now.
It’s a shame, considering how important he was in creating one of the best Star Wars games ever. Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast is a fantastic game that any Star Wars fan should definitely play. A big part of what made it so good was the incredibly fun lightsaber fighting.
Jedi Outcast cleverly streamlines the Jedi Trials to quickly get you wielding a lightsaber – a fantastic feature! Once you have it, the game throws you into stunning environments where you’re free to explore and fight. It perfectly captures the chaotic energy of the Star Wars films, making every battle feel intense and unpredictable. The dramatic slow-motion replays after each fight are a particularly cool addition.
1. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
A More Civilized Age
Many Star Wars games focus on the raw power of lightsabers, but few capture the weapon’s grace and finesse. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was different, aiming to recreate the elements that originally made fans fall in love with the Star Wars universe.
At its core, Knights of the Old Republic is a role-playing game where battles play out in turns, but you can pause and issue commands in real-time. Combat isn’t just about button-mashing; it’s a thoughtful, tactical experience where each attack and response feels deliberate and planned, like a carefully choreographed sequence.
