Mel Brooks had parodied popular culture many times before, and would continue to do so, when he created the beloved comedy Spaceballs. While his character Yogurt, a take on Yoda, hinted at a sequel called The Search for More Money, Spaceballs didn’t launch a series like Brooks’ Blazing Saddles. Fans have been hoping for a follow-up to the Star Wars spoof for decades.
Good news for fans! After a long wait, Spaceballs 2 is finally being released, and to celebrate, the original Spaceballs movie will be available to stream on Tubi for free starting June 1, 2026.
The sequel to Spaceballs, titled Spaceballs 2, is scheduled to come out on April 23, 2027. Mel Brooks will reprise his role as Yogurt, and original cast members Bill Pullman (Lone Starr), Rick Moranis (Dark Helmet), and Daphne Zuniga (Queen Vespa) are also returning. Joining them are new cast members Josh Gad, who also helped write the script, alongside Keke Palmer and Lewis Pullman.
Although now considered a beloved 80s comedy, Spaceballs actually received a lot of criticism when it first came out, resulting in a surprisingly low 52% score on Rotten Tomatoes. While critics enjoyed the movie’s funny jokes and memorable characters, they felt the plot was weak and didn’t measure up to Mel Brooks’ earlier work from the 1970s.
Over time, Spaceballs has become recognized as one of the great comedy spoofs of the 1980s, joining films like Airplane! and The Naked Gun. Recently, ScreenRant included it in a list of nine lighthearted sci-fi movies, praising its playful humor and silly, slapstick gags as key to its enduring appeal.
Mel Brooks’ film is famous for its memorable lines, like “May the Schwartz be with you,” which playfully references the iconic phrase from Star Wars. Now, a sequel called Spaceballs: The New One (Brooks joked the title reflected finding more money in his basement) aims to become a similarly beloved comedy. It will do this by satirizing decades of Star Wars and other science fiction franchises.
