Okay, so I’m hearing some really exciting news! A reliable source is saying Nintendo might drop a brand new Super Smash Bros. game as soon as next year! I’ve been waiting forever for a new one, and if this is true, I’m going to be so hyped!
With Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai returning from retirement, fans have been hoping for an announcement about a new game, but so far, there’s been no news.
The speculation started when Sakurai, while launching a YouTube channel about game development after a short break, suggested he couldn’t see a future Super Smash Bros. game without his involvement. He also hinted that Nintendo considered the series so valuable they would likely create another installment.
After that, Sakurai went back to making games and released Kirby Air Riders, a project he was very enthusiastic about.
So, Sakurai’s been pretty silent since finishing the last Smash game, but my buddy Kiwi Talkz says he’s actually working on a new one! Apparently, it might come out way sooner than anyone expects. It’s exciting to think about, honestly!

New Super Smash Bros game in development and targeting 2027 release
Kiwi Talkz, a popular interviewer of game developers on YouTube, recently shared on X (formerly Twitter) that Nintendo and Rockstar are preparing for a very busy few years, with numerous major game releases on the horizon.
He shared his excitement about upcoming releases from his four favorite game series. He mentioned Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected in November, a new Metroid game is coming soon, a new Super Smash Bros. game is planned for the next year or two, and another Zelda game and its accompanying movie are scheduled for 2027.
I’m really excited because new installments are planned for four of my all-time favorite game series! We’ll see GTA 6 in November, a new Metroid game soon, another Super Smash Bros. game within the next couple of years, and a new Zelda game along with its movie adaptation in 2027.

The YouTuber didn’t give many specifics about the upcoming Smash game, but hinted he could reveal more on a podcast sometime in May.
When asked directly if he knew details about the projects, he just said “of course” and added a smiling emoji.
I heard this rumor a while back – apparently, Masahiro Sakurai would only come back for another Super Smash Bros. game if Nintendo let him develop ‘Kirby Air Riders’ beforehand. It’s a pretty wild idea, but that’s what Kiwi Talkz reported!
According to a statement made in June 2025, while Bandai Namco might be starting preliminary work on a project, it’s probably not happening. The speaker emphasized that Masahiro Sakurai is crucial to the planning process, particularly when dealing with third-party companies, and his industry reputation and influence are incredibly valuable.

Details about the next Super Smash Bros. game are still scarce, including which characters will make an appearance. The previous game, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, was unique for including every fighter from past games, and then added many new ones like Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII, Kazuya from Tekken, Steve from Minecraft, and finally Sora from Kingdom Hearts.
It’s currently unclear if the next release will be an expanded version of Ultimate or a completely new series.
