30-year-old dog rescued after owner dies – and it could be world’s oldest dog ever

A very old dog, possibly the oldest in the world, has been saved in France after its owner passed away. The dog is at least 30 years old and might be eligible for a Guinness World Record.

Most dogs live to be about 12 years old, so it’s wonderful when a pet lives longer, especially one you’ve raised from a puppy. Smaller breeds often live even longer, with many reaching 14 or 15 years old.

There are stories coming from France about a small dog named Lazare, a Continental Toy Spaniel, who is said to be at least 30 years old.

I read in The Times that this little dog ended up with the animal welfare organization, The Spa, after his owner sadly passed away. They’re now taking care of him, which is so good to hear!

Lazare the dog could be a Guinness World Record holder

Lazare, a name meaning “God helps,” is an older dog dealing with several health issues. He has arthritis, poor eyesight and hearing, and his tongue tends to loll out of his mouth.

After 10 days at an animal shelter in the French Alps called Annecy Marlio Spa, Lazare found a loving new home with Ophélie Boudol. She’s been sharing updates on his adjustment and well-being on Instagram.

The shelter staff verified Lazare’s age while he was in their care. “We’ve confirmed it twice – Lazare is 31 years old,” stated Anne-Sophie Moyon, the shelter’s director.

Lazare’s new owner wasn’t looking to adopt a dog with a history of abuse, but they immediately connected with him and decided to give him a home.

The Spa is asking Guinness World Records to verify the dog’s age, hoping he’ll be recognized as the oldest dog ever, surpassing the current record holder, Bluey.

Bluey, an Australian cattle dog, lived a remarkable 29 years and held the record for the longest-lived dog for many years, passing away in 1939.

Lazare isn’t the only dog capturing attention online. Late in April, a Jack Russell named Ellbie escaped from her home in Australia and was trapped on a narrow ledge for two days. Firefighters were finally able to rescue her using ropes.
