This show started by following a local game warden, but a shocking murder quickly transformed the story and captivated the small Wyoming town of Saddlestring.

Based on the novels by C.J. Box and created by John Erick and Drew Dowdle, Joe Pickett offers a more subtle and complete take on the modern Western than Yellowstone. The series, starring Michael Dorman as Joe Pickett, presents a fresh perspective on America’s first national park.

Joining Dorman in Joe Pickett are Sharon Lawrence, known from NYPD Blue, and Paul Sparks of Boardwalk Empire. The series is a compelling murder mystery, reminiscent of popular shows like Longmire and Dark Winds. It masterfully combines beautiful landscapes with unexpected twists, creating a realistic and gripping Western crime thriller.

Joe Pickett Is The Perfect Neo-Western Crime Drama

I honestly think Joe Pickett is everything a modern Western crime drama should be. What really grabbed me were the well-developed characters – they felt so real – and the mysteries were genuinely gripping. Plus, the show tackles important issues we’re facing today, all while showcasing some absolutely stunning scenery. And honestly, it gives you a much more authentic feel for the Yellowstone area than anything else I’ve seen – it’s a far better look at the park itself.

If you’re like me and really miss Longmire, you should check out Joe Pickett. It’s about a guy who just wants a quiet life with his family in Wyoming, maybe working with wildlife. But instead, he ends up as a game warden dealing with way more trouble than he signed up for – think small-town crime and big wilderness drama. It’s got that same feel of a good man trying to do the right thing in a tough place.

Similar to Taylor Sheridan’s popular Westerns, this show features intense violence while exploring the controversial issues of oil exploitation near national parks and the rights of Native Americans in the area. However, it tells this story through the eyes of a quiet, unassuming main character – a stark contrast to the Dutton family we often see.

I’ve been watching a lot of Westerns lately, and honestly, Joe Pickett is such a breath of fresh air. So many shows now have these complicated, morally gray heroes, but Joe? He’s a genuinely good guy. All he wants is to live a peaceful life with his family and do his job looking after the wildlife around Yellowstone. But, of course, things never quite work out that way, and there are plenty of people in the Wyoming wilderness who have other plans for him.

Paramount Canceled Joe Pickett Too Soon

The show Joe Pickett was gaining popularity with both Western fans and critics after moving to Paramount+ for its second season. That’s why the cancellation announcement in October 2023 came as a surprise, abruptly ending the story. It’s especially disappointing because the second season left viewers with an unresolved cliffhanger.

Until Paramount cancelled it, everyone thought Joe Pickett would definitely be back for a third season. The show seemed to be gaining fans in its second season and had the potential to become even more popular. Thankfully, the two seasons we have are actually even more enjoyable when you watch them again.

It seems Paramount+ decided it didn’t have space for another Western-themed show alongside Taylor Sheridan’s series – a decision that looks questionable now that Sheridan has moved to NBCUniversal in 2029. At the same time, author C.J. Box is still releasing new Joe Pickett books, which could have provided material for several more seasons of a TV show.
