Nicolas Cage’s Critically Panned Action Film 211 Is a Hit on Starz

He’s a highly successful and well-known actor who has appeared in many popular and critically praised films. Some of his most famous roles include the cult favorite Face/Off, the acclaimed Adaptation, and the National Treasure movies.

I’m really excited about Nicolas Cage’s upcoming movie, it’s supposed to be huge in 2026! He’s had some misses over the years, of course, and a few films that didn’t do well. But it’s cool to see that even one of his least-liked movies, 211, is getting a second look and finding an audience on streaming now.

According to FlixPatrol, Nicolas Cage’s film 211 is currently the second most popular movie on Starz in the U.S. While known as 211 in the United States, it’s called Code 211 or The Bank Heist internationally. Released in June 2018, it’s generally considered one of Nicolas Cage’s lower-rated films, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

What Is 211 About?

Police Officer Mike Chandler of Chesterford takes high school student Kenny Ralston on a ride-along as a consequence for a school fight. Officer Steve MacAvoy, who is married to Mike’s daughter Lisa, also joins them. During the ride-along, Mike finds out through Steve that Lisa is expecting a baby, despite a strained relationship between them.

Just as Mike, Steve, and Kenny are enjoying a coffee break, a bank robbery breaks out at the Chesterford bank, and they find themselves caught in the crossfire. The film, titled 211, references the California Penal Code for robbery and is based on the actual 1997 North Hollywood shootout.

The film stars Dwayne Cameron as Steve MacAvoy, Michael Rainey Jr. as Kenny Ralston, Sophie Skelton as Lisa MacAvoy, and Alexandra Dinu as Agent Rossi. Shari Watson plays Shawnee Ralston, and the bank robbers—Tre, Rob, Luke, and Hyde—are portrayed by Ori Pfeffer, Sean James, Michael Bellisario, and Weston Cage, Nicolas Cage’s son.

211 Is One of Nicolas Cage’s Lowest-Rated Movies

Critics didn’t love the film 211, giving it a 4% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While it’s not Nicolas Cage’s worst-reviewed movie, it still performed poorly with audiences. 211 only made $1.1 million in theaters and received a 12% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Film critic David Ehrlich of IndieWire described the Nicolas Cage thriller 211 as ‘unwatchable,’ even for a direct-to-video movie. He noted it was so bad, it almost made you appreciate the effort put into most bad movies. Despite receiving largely negative reviews, 211 has recently become popular on streaming platforms.

Even the TV show Community did an episode about Chevy Chase’s career, which has seen both huge successes and notable failures. Despite it all, he’s still a very popular actor, and people continue to watch his movies, even if they aren’t very good. This enduring appeal might be why his film 211 recently found an audience on streaming services.
