Loki is returning to fulfill his glorious purpose in Avengers: Doomsday.
The upcoming film Doomsday, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo (known for their work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe), will conclude the Multiverse Saga. Robert Downey Jr. will star as Doctor Doom, leading a conflict that spans multiple universes. The movie promises a mix of familiar and new characters, including classic Avengers, heroes introduced in recent films, and even members of the X-Men.
The cast announcement included a familiar face – Tom Hiddleston returning as Loki, the mischievous Asgardian god. First appearing in 2011’s Thor as the jealous brother of Thor, Loki quickly became a fan favorite, especially after serving as the villain in 2012’s The Avengers. Throughout the Infinity Saga, he evolved from a villain to a more complex antihero, earning a dedicated following and his own series in 2021. The Loki series ran for two seasons, ultimately showing Loki finding redemption and becoming the God of Stories.
I was so excited to hear Hiddleston talk about his role in Doomsday! He was interviewed by The River, and they asked him if we’d be seeing a lot of Loki in the movie. His response was amazing – he jokingly said that if he told us, he’d be in trouble! It’s so classic Loki, and it just makes me even more hyped for the film.
Marvel Studios is famous for being secretive about plot details, so Tom Hiddleston’s careful answer isn’t surprising. He did reveal, though, that the upcoming Avengers Doomsday will be incredible and unlike anything fans expect. He was genuinely shocked when he first read the script, saying he knew immediately it would be something special.
Tom Hiddleston hasn’t revealed much about what his role will be in the movie Doomsday. However, late last year, he described the script as incredibly impressive, praising the story’s core as truly exceptional.
So, I was reading an interview with Tom Hiddleston, and he touched on Loki’s journey. He basically confirmed that Loki’s story, as we knew it, was finished, but he stayed pretty tight-lipped about what ‘Doomsday’ – that’s what he’s calling the next phase – would actually look like. What he did say was really interesting though. He explained that for Loki to really evolve and have a different ending this time around, he needed to come to terms with everything he’d done in the past. He said it was about giving Loki control over his own narrative, letting him be the author of his own destiny, which I thought was a really cool way to put it.
Besides Tom Hiddleston, Chris Hemsworth—who plays Thor—has also talked about the upcoming reunion in Doomsday. He described the film as “incredibly emotional” earlier this year. Like Hiddleston, Hemsworth didn’t reveal many details, but added, “It’s going to blow you away. I don’t know how [the Russo Brothers] do it.”
Although details are scarce, Loki’s return in the next Avengers movie is highly anticipated. This is partly because his story seemed to end previously, and fans love the chemistry between actors Tom Hiddleston and Chris Hemsworth. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
