Outer Range: The Underrated Western Sci-Fi Series That’s Aging Well

Classic adventure shows like Bonanza, Gunsmoke, and The Virginian were once very popular, and Yellowstone has brought that genre back into the spotlight. We’re now seeing exciting new takes on the Western, such as the thrilling Dark Winds, which blends the neo-western style with detective stories. Beloved characters are also returning, like Raylan Givens in Justified: City Primeval, and even the cult favorite Firefly is getting a revival.

Several westerns created after the success of Yellowstone have rightfully become popular, including many of Yellowstone‘s own spin-offs. However, some excellent shows haven’t gotten the attention they deserve. One of these is Outer Range, which only lasted two seasons on Prime Video. The series begins like a classic Yellowstonestyle western, focusing on Josh Brolin as a Wyoming rancher trying to protect his land and family. But when a strange traveler, played by Imogen Poots, arrives, a bizarre black hole appears on his property, transforming the show from a simple western into a mind-bending sci-fi mystery reminiscent of Dark or Twin Peaks*.

The first season of Outer Range received a somewhat mixed reaction, but the show truly hit its stride and became excellent in its second season. Unfortunately, Amazon cancelled it shortly after, despite its improvement. Even though it was cut short, Outer Range is still a show worth watching.

Outer Range Is A Unique Mashup Of Genres

It feels like most original ideas have already been explored. Now, true originality comes from taking something existing and doing it in a new way. A great way to achieve this is by combining genres that don’t usually go together. For example, the film Freaky blends a body-swap comedy with a slasher horror movie. Sinners mixes a vampire story with a gangster film, all set to a blues soundtrack. And Kill Bill combines kung fu action with the style of spaghetti westerns, adding a touch of blaxploitation.

Outer Range is a truly unique show that blends the western and supernatural genres in a fascinating way. It starts like a classic western, exploring themes of family, honor, and the challenges of frontier life. However, the story takes a surprising turn when a mysterious black hole appears on the family ranch, transforming the show into a mind-bending mystery reminiscent of Lost.

The show blends classic Western elements with the suspenseful, puzzle-box storytelling of series like Lost, Dark, and Twin Peaks, resulting in a truly original experience. Lewis Pullman plays the younger version of Brolin’s character, creating a compelling father-son relationship that Marvel fans might see as similar to Thanos and the Void.

Outer Range Is A Show That Ages Well

It’s incredibly difficult to create a TV show that resonates with viewers when it first airs, and even rarer for a show to remain popular years later. While it occasionally happens, most shows quickly fade into obscurity and are forgotten. Despite being cancelled just a couple of years ago, Outer Range seems to be holding up remarkably well.

It’s common for TV shows cut short to not hold up well when you try to watch them all at once, simply because the story feels unfinished and many questions remain unanswered. However, Outer Range is an exception. Its unique mix of science fiction and western themes, combined with Josh Brolin’s strong performance, makes it enjoyable even though it was cancelled before it could finish its story. You can still appreciate the show now, even knowing a third season is unlikely.
