Did Amazon really need to announce the cancellation of Gen V right now? It feels especially jarring because we’re in the middle of The Boys‘ final season with many unanswered questions. The announcement feels like a major spoiler. Throughout the current season of The Boys, there have been hints about Marie Moreau and the other Gen V characters, but they’ve always been kept out of sight. For example, Stan Edgar inquired about Marie during a meeting with Starlight, but she was conveniently absent.
I really enjoy Gen V, so I was looking forward to seeing those characters interact with the cast of The Boys in the final season of the main show. While the season finale of Gen V wasn’t great, it hinted at a cool crossover between the two groups. That’s why it was frustrating to get more than halfway through The Boys‘ last season without even a glimpse of the Gen V characters.
To make matters worse, Amazon unexpectedly cancelled Gen V while season five of The Boys was still being filmed. This happened before the Gen V characters could even appear in The Boys, making their eventual inclusion feel pointless. Eric Kripke, who oversees the entire franchise, explained that Amazon cancelled Gen V for business reasons, not because of any creative issues with the show itself.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Eric Kripke revealed he worked hard to save Gen V from cancellation. He also mentioned that ideas originally planned for the show’s third season might be used in other upcoming The Boys spin-offs. This strongly suggests that the fifth season of The Boys won’t end with Butcher unleashing the supe virus, as that would leave no super-powered individuals for Gen V to focus on.
Gen V Season 3 Not Happening Is A Big Disappointment
I was really disappointed with how the second season of Gen V ended. When they switched up the main villain and brought in Ethan Slater, things just went downhill fast. The finale felt like a typical, over-the-top superhero fight – the kind The Boys used to poke fun at! It’s a real shame the show’s been cancelled, though, because Gen V was genuinely good and deserved to keep going.
As a critic, I have to say Gen V isn’t just a spin-off of The Boys; it’s a surprisingly strong young adult drama in its own right, cleverly set within that same universe. Think of it as The Boys colliding with shows like Felicity or Dawson’s Creek – all the satirical edge, but focused on the drama of college life for superpowered students. And the characters! Marie, in particular, is a standout – potentially the most powerful person we’ve seen in this whole franchise, and burdened by a truly harrowing past. She’s just one of many compelling figures Gen V manages to juggle so well.
I was really struck by how Gen V tackled some tough issues. It wasn’t preachy at all, but used the characters’ powers as a way to explore things young people go through. Like, Marie’s ability to control blood is linked to her period, and it’s heartbreaking considering how she lost her parents. Then there’s Emma, who can change size by either eating or not – it felt like a really sensitive way to show what someone with an eating disorder might experience. And Jordan’s power to change genders? It was a clear and powerful way to talk about gender fluidity. What I loved is that the show addressed these issues without explicitly having to, letting the story speak for itself.
Honestly, it was starting to feel a bit predictable with Godolkin University – every few episodes, a new, secretly bad dean would show up. It was only two seasons, but still! I was really excited because Gen V was hinting at some huge storylines happening outside of Godolkin for season 3, and now that the show’s been cancelled, it’s so frustrating knowing we’ll probably never see those plans come to life. I’m holding out hope they might be able to use some of those ideas in the Vought Rising spin-off, though.
