Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Will Outdo Season 2’s Weakest Episode In Season 4 Premiere

The fourth season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will include a revamped version of an episode that wasn’t as strong in season two. The new season begins streaming on Paramount+ on July 23rd. This season will be the last with the standard 10-episode format; the fifth and final season will be shorter, with only 6 episodes.

Season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was the best season of the show so far. Both critics and viewers loved it, especially the funny team-up with Star Trek: Lower Decks directed by Jonathan Frakes, and the show’s first-ever musical episode, “Subspace Rhapsody.”

Season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds featured several standout episodes, including the compelling courtroom drama “Ad Astra Per Aspera,” the romantic time travel story “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow,” and the humorous Vulcan-centric episode “Charades.” While one episode didn’t quite hit the mark, the show plans to revisit a similar concept in season 4 with a fresh approach.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 Will Have A Do-Over Of Season 2’s Worst Episode

The first episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4, titled “Valles Marineris,” features a unique Western theme, with Captain Pike, Dr. M’Benga, and Lieutenant Nooien-Singh embracing the cowboy lifestyle while riding horses.

Captain Pike, La’an Noonien-Singh, and Dr. M’Benga last teamed up for a mission in season 2, episode 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, titled “Among the Lotus Eaters.” They visited Rigel VII, where a radioactive meteor caused both them and the crew of the Enterprise to lose their memories.

In the “Among the Lotus Eaters” episode, Captain Pike discovers that Ensign Zac Nguyen (played by David Huynh), who was mistakenly left on Rigel VII during a previous mission, not only survived but has become the planet’s leader. Zac is now seeking revenge against Pike, all while the crew races against the clock to save the life of a critically injured La’an.

While “Among the Lotus Eaters” wasn’t a standout episode, the season 4 premiere of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds promises to be much stronger. The early look at Captain Pike, La’an, and M’Benga as cowboys suggests a more lively and enjoyable adventure than their previous, somewhat dull, mission to Rigel VII.

Strange New Worlds’ Cowboy Episode Also Calls Back To Star Trek’s Original Pilot

The fourth season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds features an episode with a Western theme, similar to the season 2 episode “Among the Lotus Eaters.” Both episodes draw inspiration from the original Star Trek pilot, “The Cage,” which first introduced Captain Pike (Jeffrey Hunter) but was ultimately rejected by NBC.

The original Star Trek pilot, “The Cage,” revealed that Captain Pike had a childhood spent riding horses and growing up in Mojave, California. The powerful aliens of Talos IV used illusions to show Pike scenes from his past, including his hometown. They also made him relive a risky mission to Rigel VII, a planet Chris returns to in season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

With a unique history, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds took nearly 57 years to go from initial concept to a full series – a playful record for television. The original pilot, “The Cage,” was made in 1965, and the series finally premiered on Paramount+ in 2022. Strange New Worlds openly acknowledges and references its roots in that original pilot and the broader Star Trek universe.

Many fans consider Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to be the strongest and most well-received of the Star Trek shows on Paramount+. However, not all episodes have been perfect. The start of season 4 aims to give Captain Pike, La’an Noonien-Singh, and Dr. M’Benga a more successful team dynamic than they had during their previous adventure on Rigel VII.
