Robert Kirkman has described the situation as a complete disaster, and most fans appear to agree with his assessment.
Robert Kirkman, the creator of Invincible and The Walking Dead, recently shared his strong dislike for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 during an interview on The Escape Pod Podcast. He bluntly called the movie “dog shit,” though he generally avoids sharing his opinions on films publicly.
Robert Kirkman doesn’t think The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is entirely bad. He praised both Jamie Foxx and Andrew Garfield, saying Garfield was a fantastic Spider-Man and that parts of the movies were great, but the film as a whole felt disjointed. While many fans agree with Kirkman, some acknowledge that nostalgia plays a role in how people view it. Despite its flaws, many still find redeeming qualities in the movie and don’t consider it a complete failure.
The screenplay for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was written by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Jeff Pinkner, and it was Andrew Garfield’s second time playing Peter Parker in a movie. The film featured returning cast members Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy and Sally Field as May Parker, along with new faces like Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn, Jamie Foxx as Electro (Max Dillon), Paul Giamatti as the Rhino (Aleksei Sytsevich), and Felicity Jones as Felicia Hardy.
Despite earning over $716 million at the box office on a $293 million budget when it came out in 2014, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 didn’t receive much praise from critics. Currently, Rotten Tomatoes gives it a “Fresh” rating of only 51%, although audiences seem to like it more, with a score of 64% on the site’s “Popcornmeter.” Both of these scores were significantly lower than those of the first Amazing Spider-Man film.
What’s Next for Spider-Man on the Silver Screen?
Despite ongoing debate about the quality of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Andrew Garfield is still celebrated for his portrayal of Spider-Man, especially after appearing in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. Now, fans are excited for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which will show Tom Holland’s Peter Parker dealing with the aftermath of almost everyone forgetting he exists.
The new Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, comes out July 31st and will feature familiar faces from the Marvel Cinematic Universe like Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and the Punisher (Jon Bernthal) alongside Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. The film will also introduce several new characters who could become important to the MCU’s future, though their specific roles are currently unknown and are generating a lot of buzz.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 can be streamed on HBO Max and Disney+.
