Valve says it’s “bummed” about Steam Machine delay as hardware issues mount

Valve has acknowledged the continued delays with the Steam Machine, and says the situation is also causing frustration within the company. These delays are due to ongoing problems with the supply chain, which are affecting all of their planned hardware releases for 2026.

In November 2025, the company introduced the Steam Machine, Steam Controller, and Steam Frame, signaling its entry into the PC gaming hardware market. The Steam Controller is scheduled to be available on May 4th, but the Steam Machine’s release has been delayed beyond its initial early 2026 target, and a new launch date hasn’t been announced.

I’m hearing the reason for the hold-up is because of problems the whole tech world is having right now. It seems like there’s a shortage of things like memory and storage, and prices are going up. A big part of it is that everyone wants more powerful tech for things like AI, which is driving up demand for these parts.

Valve says hardware shortages are “unavoidable” challenge

In an interview with PC Gamer, Valve designers Lawrence Yang and Steve Cardinali discussed how the delay affected their work and the difficulties they encountered with the Steam Machine.

We’re definitely disappointed with the current situation,” Yang explained. “But it’s reassuring to know we’re not alone. Everyone is working to find solutions to issues like RAM and memory shortages, and rising prices.

We expect these parts shortages to affect most of our products. We’re working hard to keep production going and maintain competitive pricing, but it’s definitely a difficult situation.

Earlier this year, Valve warned of potential problems with the Steam Machine, explaining that they couldn’t yet announce a price or release date because essential parts were becoming scarce and more expensive.

Cardinali said the timing of the disruption made development particularly difficult.

He explained that engineers who create products don’t want sudden, last-minute challenges. He admitted it’s frustrating, but assured listeners they’re doing everything they can to find a solution.

Although Valve announced all three products at the same time, they knew the launches might not happen simultaneously. They decided to release the Steam Controller first, rather than holding it back to coincide with the Steam Machine’s release.

Yang explained that although these products are closely related and were announced together, the company anticipated potential delays and planned to release them individually as soon as each was finished.

We initially expected the Steam Controller to launch before other products. Because of this, there wasn’t any reason to force everything to release at the same time – doing so would have just delayed everything else.

Valve also responded to rumors that they intentionally delayed the controller’s release to coincide with a larger hardware announcement.

We’ve heard some speculation that we’re delaying the Steam Controller to coordinate with other product launches, but that’s not true. We’re shipping the Steam Controller as soon as we’re ready, and now is the time.

The company also explained that making sure enough controllers were available at launch was a major reason for the timing of the release.

Cardinali explained they stocked up to meet what they expect will be a lot of customer interest.

It’s not just the Steam Machine, Frame, and Controller facing supply problems – the Steam Deck has been unavailable in many areas since February.
