John Wick: Chapter 4’s Cliffhanger Will Finally Be Resolved

The ending of John Wick: Chapter 4, released three years ago, seemed to give Keanu Reeves’ famous assassin a fitting, though sad, farewell. He bravely fought his way up a mountain filled with enemies, ultimately sacrificing himself to destroy the leadership of the High Table, and finally found peace in death, reuniting with his deceased wife. It was a satisfying conclusion to the four-film story of a hardened man haunted by his past.

Despite the seemingly definitive ending of the fourth film, the incredibly successful John Wick franchise – having earned Lionsgate over $1 billion – is continuing. A fifth John Wick movie is planned with Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski returning, meaning John Wick will likely be brought back to life, his death will be explained away, or the film will explore his afterlife. In addition, the studio is also developing several spin-off stories set within the John Wick universe, collectively titled From the World of John Wick.

Last year saw the release of From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, which, while not as strong as the original John Wick films, was a good action movie and introduced us to the compelling character of Eve, played by Ana de Armas. Now, Donnie Yen is filming From the World of John Wick: Caine, a story that continues a plot thread introduced at the end of John Wick: Chapter 4.

Caine Is The Most Promising John Wick Spinoff Yet

While the John Wick series’ attempts to expand into a larger universe haven’t all worked out, the new film Caine shows real promise. Ballerina was an enjoyable action movie, but The Continental didn’t quite hit the mark – it felt stuck between being a film and a TV show and lacked a strong story. Caine, which centers on the character of Yen’s blind assassin from John Wick: Chapter 4, is the most exciting spinoff so far.

Donnie Yen isn’t just acting in Caine; he’s also the director, having co-written the story with Chad Stahelski. This isn’t a typical spin-off trying to revive a tired franchise. Instead, it’s a chance for Yen to direct and star in a large-scale action film, backed by a well-funded studio and top stunt professionals. The John Wick connection is what secured the financing and allows Yen the creative control to fully realize his unique vision for action movies.

Caine Will Have To Reveal What Happened After John Wick 4’s Post-Credits Scene

Unlike the Ballerina spin-off, which was added to the John Wick universe later on, the Caine movie was intentionally set up in a previous film. The post-credits scene of John Wick: Chapter 4 shows Caine in Paris, trying to find his daughter. However, before he can reconnect with her, he’s attacked by Akira, who is seeking revenge. This sets the stage for Caine’s story: his efforts to build a relationship with his daughter will be complicated by Akira’s desire to avenge her father.

The new film has a compelling premise: a father trying to reconnect with his daughter, and a daughter seeking revenge for her father. This creates fascinating possibilities for exploring the complex relationship between them, and gives actors Yen and Rina Sawayama a chance to deliver powerful, emotional performances alongside the exciting action. Following the massive scale of John Wick: Chapter 4, this film – focusing on the character Caine – has high expectations to meet. However, Yen is a highly skilled action star, and I believe he’s up to the challenge.
