The fate of Scrubs has been revealed.
The new season of Scrubs premieres on ABC in February and will also be available on Hulu. It starts with a big shift: JD (Zach Braff) is now the Chief of Medicine at Sacred Heart, a role he wasn’t quite expecting. Luckily, he’s joined by familiar faces Turk (Donald Faison) and Elliot (Sarah Chalke), who are now experienced doctors mentoring a new generation.
ABC has announced that Scrubs is getting another season! The show revealed the exciting news on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, playfully stating, “Just what the doctor ordered: Scrubs will be back 💙”
While the exact number of episodes hasn’t been revealed, the second season of the show will probably have a similar, shorter run as the first, which had nine episodes.
ABC has renewed all of its scripted TV shows for more seasons. The only show that hasn’t been renewed yet is the new detective drama, R.J. Decker, starring Scott Speedman, which is still airing its first season and its future is uncertain.
It’s not a shock that Scrubs is being renewed. The revival’s first episode was the most-watched comedy on any network this season with viewers aged 18-49. Nielsen data also shows it attracted a strong 11 million viewers across all platforms within the first 35 days.
The original stars, Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke, return, and several other beloved characters make appearances throughout the season. Judy Reyes and John C. McGinley reprise their roles as Carla and Dr. Cox. Phill Lewis and Robert Maschio appear as guest stars playing Dr. Hooch and Dr. Quinlan. Later on, Christa Miller returns as Jordan, and Neil Flynn is back as JD’s old rival, The Janitor.
In addition to references to the show Scrubs, the series introduces new characters like Dr. Samantha “Sam” Tosh (played by Ava Bunn), Dr. Asher Green (Jacob Dudman), Dr. Blake Lewis (David Gridley), Dr. Amara Hadi (Layla Mohammadi), and Dr. Dashana Trainor (Amanda Morrow). As the season progresses, many of these new doctors find themselves involved in romantic relationships.
In the tenth season of Scrubs, JD starts dating Charlie, played by Rachel Bilson (known from The O.C). This is his first significant relationship following his divorce from Elliot, and thankfully, they remain friendly. Meanwhile, Dr. Cox is dealing with some health issues, and actor John McGinley has hinted that his character will have a bigger role in the new season.
Bill Lawrence, who created the original series, returned as an executive producer for the revival through his production company, Doozer Productions. He was joined by Doozer’s Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer, as well as stars Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke. Aseem Batra is the showrunner and also an executive producer. The revived Scrubs has been a hit with both critics (89% on Rotten Tomatoes) and viewers (93%).
