AMC Officially Orders Thunder Road Starring Dennis Quaid

Dennis Quaid, known for his Emmy nomination, is returning to television with a new show about Formula 1 racing.

AMC has officially approved a new NASCAR drama series called Thunder Road, starring Dennis Quaid. News of the show first emerged in November 2025, and Quaid signed on earlier this month. The network confirmed the series at its recent presentation in New York, signaling the start of production.

What Happens in Thunder Road?

The new series, Thunder Road, tells the story of the Whitlock family over several generations. They have a long history in stock car racing and strong connections to the rural South where their family began.

Rising star Reagan will portray Duane Whitlock, known as ‘The Wrecking Ball,’ a legendary race car driver who built a powerful racing business starting with illegal moonshine runs and local dirt tracks. He’s determined to preserve his family’s legacy, even as fierce rivals try everything they can to take him down. The Whitlocks are a hardworking family facing possible ruin, and the patriarch is desperately fighting to stay on top.

I’m so excited for Thunder Road! I heard they’re finally starting production this summer, and we’ll get to see it on AMC and AMC+ in 2027. It feels like a long wait, but it’ll be worth it!

John Fusco, known for his work on Young Guns and Marco Polo, created and is an executive producer of Thunder Road. Taylor Elmore (Justified) serves as showrunner and also an executive producer.

Dan McDermott, who leads content for AMC Global Media and heads AMC Studios, announced a partnership with NASCAR, praising their long history of engaging fans. He called the casting of Dennis Quaid in Thunder Road perfect and expressed excitement for the series, describing it as a fast-paced and captivating show.
