The Masters of the Universe Film Will Finally Do Skeletor Justice

While often associated with its hero, He-Man, the villains are crucial to the Masters of the Universe franchise. The team behind the new movie seems to recognize this, as Amazon MGM Studios recently released a video focusing on the antagonists. Called “Forces of Evil,” the featurette on their YouTube channel showcases the film’s most evil characters, including the iconic Skeletor.

Skeletor is the most recognizable villain from Masters of the Universe, first appearing in the 1983 cartoon. His depiction in the upcoming live-action movie will likely determine whether it succeeds or fails. While fans have had some valid worries about this new version of Skeletor, a recent featurette called “Forces of Evil” suggests the film is heading in the right direction. Director Travis Knight has confirmed that one of Skeletor’s defining characteristics will definitely be included in the movie.

Jared Leto’s Skeletor Has Worried Masters of the Universe Fans

Skeletor in the new Master of the Universe movie looks quite similar to the classic cartoon version, which is a good start, especially when compared to Frank Langella’s portrayal. However, some fans are concerned about other aspects of the character. Jared Leto, who plays He-Man’s enemy, has been in a few movies that weren’t successful recently, including Suicide Squad, Morbius, and Tron: Ares.

After the issues with his performance in Suicide Squad, many fans are worried Jared Leto won’t be a good Skeletor. The movie’s promotion hasn’t shown much of his acting, but trailers reveal he’s using a deep, threatening voice – a big departure from the classic high-pitched voice Alan Oppenheimer made famous. Plus, the trailers portray Skeletor as a very serious villain, which makes him feel less unique and more like a typical fantasy bad guy.

Fortunately, a behind-the-scenes look at the film, called “Forces of Evil,” calmed fans’ concerns about how Skeletor would be portrayed. Director Knight explained that he remembered villains being appealing because they were funny, scary, or cool – and he believes Skeletor embodies all three qualities. This was encouraging to hear, as Skeletor’s playful and over-the-top personality was a major part of what made him so popular in the original cartoon.

Okay, let’s talk Skeletor. He’s a villain who somehow manages to be both genuinely menacing and hilariously silly. What really made him stand out, though, was his wit. The guy could deliver an insult like nobody’s business, whether he was yelling at He-Man or just berating his own goons. There’s one line from the episode ‘Hunt for He-Man’ that always stuck with me – he tells Trap Jaw, ‘I could write a book about what you don’t know!’ It’s a perfect example of his delightfully cutting humor and just makes the character so much fun to watch.

Skeletor Represents the Masters of the Universe Franchise

Leaving out Skeletor’s more comical scenes from the Masters of the Universe trailers was a smart move, even though those moments are important to his character. It avoided giving away the film’s jokes and, more importantly, allowed the trailers to present him as a genuinely dangerous villain in a short amount of time. The marketing campaign has intentionally focused on making Skeletor appear intimidating, which should allow his humorous side to work better in the movie without diminishing the serious moments.

Skeletor, the villain from Masters of the Universe, is a great example of what makes the whole franchise work. It started as a lighthearted cartoon designed to sell toys, and while not every version of Masters of the Universe needs to stay that playful, a live-action movie has different demands. However, treating the world of Eternia and its characters with excessive seriousness would be a mistake.

Netflix’s Masters of the Universe: Revelation and Masters of the Universe: Revolution successfully updated the classic franchise with a more mature and dramatic tone, while still capturing the fun of the original. Skeletor was particularly frightening, but also surprisingly funny at times – similar to the Joker. It’s yet to be seen if the live-action Skeletor will be able to strike the same balance between menacing, humorous, and memorable that defined the villain in the creator’s childhood.
