A demo for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S today. RPG Site recently got a hands-on preview of the Switch 2 version, and we were impressed with how well it’s running in handheld mode.
Let’s clarify a few things first. We only had a chance to play the game in handheld mode before the demo came out, so our initial thoughts are based on about half of the total experience. However, we believe no handheld device will consistently run the game above 30 frames per second, even with streaming, and the Switch 2 seems to perform surprisingly well given that. We did notice some minor slowdowns in towns, but generally the game maintains its 30 FPS target during key moments. Importantly, despite aiming for 30 FPS, the game’s controls feel very responsive. Having recently played a similar game, Kena: Bridge of Spirits, which had noticeable input lag, we were impressed by how well Rebirth handles this.

The graphics are comparable to other versions, but because the Switch 2 uses DLSS to increase resolution, it isn’t quite as crisp as the original Remake on the Switch 2 itself. However, it still looks surprisingly good in handheld mode when compared to other portable PC gaming devices. I haven’t directly compared it to the PC version with XeSS on my MSI Claw, but it seems to perform as well as, or better than, screenshots taken last year of the ROG Ally and Steam Deck. Square Enix provided us with screenshots of the game running while docked, which should give you a good idea of what to expect from the demo, though we haven’t been able to verify this ourselves. We also don’t yet know if the game performs better or worse when played while docked.
The demo is quite limited, similar to those on other platforms, and it’s too early to tell how the full game will perform. There are a lot of unknowns right now, but it’s definitely a promising beginning. While I won’t be replaying the entire game on the Switch 2 anytime soon, if you’ve been hoping to play it on a handheld and recently enjoyed Final Fantasy VII Remake, this port should likely satisfy you. The fact that the demo is available over a month before the game’s release suggests the developers are confident. Just be aware that playing Queen’s Blood is included in the demo, so it might take up more of your time than expected.
Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth is now available on PlayStation 5 and PC (via Steam). It will launch for Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S on June 3, 2026. We’ll share our detailed review of the Switch and Xbox versions soon.
