Matthew Lillard Thanks Nostalgia for Career Revival

Nostalgia is currently a powerful force in entertainment, and for some actors, it’s leading to career comebacks. Matthew Lillard recently shared on the Phase Hero podcast that the enduring popularity of films like Scooby-Doo and Scream has unexpectedly revitalized his own career. He noted that the Scooby-Doo movies are actually more popular now than when they were first released, suggesting a widespread longing for familiar things. Lillard believes this nostalgia is a key reason he’s getting acting opportunities again, as he’s strongly associated with that era. In fact, over two decades after the 2002 Scooby-Doo film became a beloved classic, Lillard is hinting at a possible return to his role as Shaggy in a new animated project.

He links his recent career comeback to a sense of nostalgia, having appeared in films like Five Nights at Freddy’s, Scream 7, and Daredevil: Born Again since 2023. Despite this success, he surprisingly doesn’t think people are genuinely excited to see him act. “I believe I’m working because people are feeling nostalgic, not because they actually like me,” he explained. It seems Lillard underestimates how much his fans are looking forward to his projects!
