Woman brings dead husband back as hologram to hold his own funeral Q&A

A woman brought her late husband ‘back to life’ at his funeral using a hologram. The hologram even participated in a pre-planned question-and-answer session with those attending.

Pam Cronrath held a unique service for her late husband, Bill, where an AI version of him – built from past recordings – appeared to deliver a final message to those who came to mourn.

Hologram husband answered questions from mourners

The BBC reports that the hologram was created to feel like a real interaction, showing the deceased husband on screen and answering pre-planned questions as if he were actually at the funeral.

My friend Pam and her husband Bill were married for almost sixty years, and when he passed away, she didn’t want a typical funeral. She wanted something really special and personal. She got the idea at a medical conference – it sounds crazy, but a doctor actually appeared as a hologram! It gave her this amazing idea to do something similar to honor Bill and keep his memory alive in a really unique way.

As a huge fan, I was blown away by how they brought back the performer! It wasn’t just some old video playing – they used a hologram created by Proto Hologram and Hyperreal that actually answered questions someone had prepared beforehand. It felt like they were really there with us, interacting live during the event!

Pam shared with the BBC that she’d promised her husband a fantastic memorial service, but it ended up being much grander – and more expensive – than the initial $2,000 budget she’d set.

Since Bill had passed away, Pam wrote the screenplay herself, drawing on sixty years of memories they shared. She explained, “I felt I knew him well enough to capture his voice and write the dialogue as he would have spoken it.”

About 200 people were at the event, and most had no idea what to expect. When a hologram of Bill appeared, he began by saying, “Just so everyone knows, I’m not physically here at Valhalla today. This is going to be interesting!”

“People were aghast,” Pam said. “Some genuinely couldn’t understand how it was happening.”

This unusual funeral follows a recent trend in the UK where people are being buried with their favorite items. Just weeks ago, a grandmother was buried with her beloved instant noodles, and guests were invited to eat them as a tribute.
