After a three-year hiatus following its series finale, the critically acclaimed show The Mandalorian is back in the top spots on streaming charts. This resurgence comes before the release of a new movie continuing the story, and it’s currently one of the most popular shows on Disney+.
New data from FlixPatrol shows The Mandalorian is currently the tenth most popular show on Disney+ in the U.S. This is a surprising comeback for the series, which last had a new season in 2023. Disney+ currently features two Star Wars shows in its top ten, with Maul Shadow Lord leading the way at number one.
The Mandalorian and Grogu are Returning to the Big Screen
When The Mandalorian premiered on Disney+ in 2019 with the streaming service’s launch, it quickly became a huge hit. While the third season received a more varied response, the first two seasons were incredibly popular with both critics and fans, and the show remains well-regarded by Star Wars enthusiasts. Its success also paved the way for other Star Wars series like Ahsoka.
I’m so excited! The Mandalorian is already a huge hit on streaming, and now Din Djarin and Grogu are coming to the big screen next month! The Mandalorian and Grogu movie arrives on May 22nd, and it’s the first Star Wars film in theaters in seven years! The story follows them as they try to take down a bunch of bad guys – criminals, warlords, and anyone still loyal to the Empire. They’re going to run into some familiar faces along the way, like Garazeb Orrelios, Rotta the Hutt, and Embo, which is going to be amazing!
It seems like The Mandalorian and Grogu might be the last chapter in Din Djarin and Grogu’s story. However, Jon Favreau recently hinted that plans have changed. Instead of ending their journey, the movie actually lays the groundwork for a new direction in Star Wars, especially for Dave Filoni’s upcoming film, which will explore the consequences of Grand Admiral Thrawn’s return.
What’s Next for Star Wars on Television?
Now that The Mandalorian and Grogu are heading to theaters, Star Wars is exploring new stories on Disney+. Currently, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is a big hit, topping the charts and receiving fantastic reviews – it even earned a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes upon its April release. This success could pave the way for more animated Star Wars stories.
Dave Filoni’s next Star Wars series is scheduled to premiere in late 2026, three years after the debut of Ahsoka. This series will continue the storyline established in The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, leading into Filoni’s future movie and a larger conflict between the New Republic and remnants of the Empire. Currently, Disney hasn’t announced any further Star Wars television projects beyond this one.
With a new Star Wars film on the horizon, The Mandalorian is returning to screens. Fans have time to rewatch the whole series before The Mandalorian and Grogu arrives.
The Mandalorian and Grogu opens in theaters on May 22, 2026.
