You know, as a total movie nerd, I always appreciate dedication, and Donnie Wahlberg really brought it with Boston Blue. He was so determined to make the film feel real that he actually offered to take a 50% pay cut! Can you believe that level of commitment?
Boston Blue is a new series connected to Blue Bloods. It centers around Danny, who transfers to the Boston Police Department hoping to reconnect with his son, Sean (Mika Amonsen). He partners with Detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green) and becomes entangled with a local Boston family. Several familiar faces from Blue Bloods, including Erin Reagan (Bridget Moynahan), Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez), and Henry Reagan (Len Cariou), have also appeared on the show.
I’m really excited for season two of the Blue Bloods spinoff! I just heard that Donnie Wahlberg, who plays Danny Reagan, is heading back to Canada soon. He was on Radio Andy and explained that even though Boston Blue is all about Boston, they actually film a lot of it up in Toronto. It’s funny how that works sometimes!
Wahlberg also talked about his first thoughts on the project and where he expected it to be filmed. He initially pictured locations like Los Angeles, Las Vegas, or Texas. But when someone proposed Boston as the setting, he immediately became enthusiastic and agreed to participate.
I was thrilled when I got the job offer – it felt like a dream! I initially imagined filming a spin-off show in a warm location like Los Angeles, Las Vegas, or Texas. But when they suggested Boston, I was surprised! It turned out to be a great idea, and I agreed to film the show there.
Mark Wahlberg really wanted to film in Boston, but it just wasn’t possible due to the budget. He even offered to donate half of his own salary to make it work, but the costs were still too high – even with pay cuts from everyone involved. Ultimately, most of the movie, Boston Blue, was filmed in Toronto instead.
The producers told me filming in Boston was too expensive and they planned to shoot in Toronto instead. I really wanted to film in Boston, so I offered to donate half of my salary to make it happen. I followed through and gave up the money, but they still wouldn’t film there – not even if the entire cast did the same. Boston was simply too costly, so we ended up shooting most of the show in Toronto.
Mark Wahlberg, a Boston native, said filming in his hometown could be challenging. The city is always crowded with tourists and has a lot going on, which often interrupted filming. He specifically mentioned the duck boats and constantly being recognized by fans wanting photos or just staring at him. Adding to the difficulty, his family still lives in Boston and wants to spend time with him while he’s working.
As of today, we don’t have a firm release date for season 2 of Boston Blue. But it’s confirmed the show will be back sometime during the 2026–2027 TV season.
