There’s a chance Seth MacFarlane could make another live-action Ted movie. While it might not be in cinemas, a new film could potentially stream on Peacock.
Currently, the show’s future is uncertain, mainly because creating the computer-generated title character, voiced by Seth MacFarlane, is costly. The show served as a backstory to MacFarlane’s two Ted films, the first of which earned $549 million despite a $50 million production cost. Considering this success, MacFarlane suggests a Ted movie released first on Peacock could be a viable idea.
According to MacFarlane, the future of the show – whether that’s a third season of Ted or a new movie released directly on Peacock – depends on the streaming service’s willingness to invest. He believes the entire cast would be interested in continuing the project, and all options are currently being considered.
Could Ted Get a Straight-To-Peacock Movie?
MacFarlane recently stated there aren’t any current plans for another season of the live-action Ted TV show. This raises the question: would Peacock still be interested in funding a Ted movie?
The first season of Ted received better ratings than the Ted movies. Critics gave it a 74% approval rating, and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes liked it even more, with a score of 90%.
I remember when the first Ted movie came out – critics gave it a pretty good score of 68%, and regular viewers even liked it more with 73%! But Ted 2… that was a letdown. Critics didn’t like it much at all, giving it only 45%, and fans weren’t thrilled either, with a score of 50%. It makes me wonder if they should just try making a movie based on the original TV show instead – that might be the way to go.
What’s Next For Ted?
Although it’s still unclear if we’ll see a live-action Ted series, Peacock is working on an animated show. Unlike the proposed live-action series, which would take place before the two Ted movies directed by Seth MacFarlane, this animated series will continue the story after the films. This new show is a return to MacFarlane’s original idea, as he once shared that he initially pitched the concept as an animated series.
In 2024, Seth MacFarlane recalled a confusing time after the Time Warner and Turner merger. He explained that the company was unsure how to utilize its creative teams, leaving everyone in a state of limbo. They didn’t want to lose their artists and writers, anticipating future projects, so employees were simply asked to submit a new animated show idea each week. MacFarlane revealed that the show Ted started as one of these weekly pitches.
Seth MacFarlane recently told Deadline that the new animated series is nearing completion and picks up after the events of the latest movie. It features the original cast – Mark Wahlberg, Amanda Seyfried, Jessica Barth, and others – and MacFarlane says it’s very funny. He’s happy to see the project come to life under the direction of Brad and Paul, who have made it genuinely enjoyable for him to watch.
Ted is streaming now on Peacock.
