Hulu’s Far Cry Won’t Adapt Any of the Games

Noah Hawley has revealed what game his new Hulu series will be based on, and the answer might be unexpected for fans. He confirmed that the show won’t be directly based on any specific video game title.

Hawley is taking inspiration from the Far Cry games, which each tell a standalone story within a larger universe, and plans to do the same with this new installment, exploring similar themes. This approach is comparable to how different stories are told within the Far Cry series, and also resembles the style of Legion with its take on the X-Men.

Noah Hawley recently shared what drew him to the Far Cry series: its anthology format, where each new game features a completely original story. He applies a similar approach to Fargo, and he envisions a Far Cry game adaptation that follows the same structure – each season telling a standalone story about ordinary people forced to confront extraordinary and increasingly brutal circumstances.

I’m not directly turning any existing games into this project. Instead, like I did with my work on projects with the Coen brothers or Legion, I want to explore what a story within the Far Cry universe could be. We could definitely discuss the challenges of adapting video games – they’re designed for interaction, which doesn’t always translate well to compelling drama.

He explained that video games typically progress through active gameplay, interspersed with skippable cut scenes. When adapting these games for television, it’s crucial to recognize that this structure can make emotional character development feel unimportant to the overall plot, which he believes is a fatal flaw for a show.

Far Cry Will Keep To the Games’ Anthology Format

Hawley has shared his appreciation for the way the Far Cry series tells different stories with each game, and he recently made a public statement about them.

Noah Hawley explained his enthusiasm for adapting the Far Cry video game series, comparing it to Fargo. He loves that Far Cry is an anthology, with each installment offering a unique take on similar ideas. He’s thrilled to be creating a large-scale action show that can evolve each season while still delving into the complexities of human nature with a playful and bold approach, and is excited to work with Rob Mac on the project.

Noah Hawley Will Be Pulling Double Duty With Far Cry

He’s currently working on two shows at once: a new series and the FX show Alien: Earth. He shared his approach to managing both roles efficiently as a showrunner.

I’m anticipating a really hectic period where I’ll be juggling two shows simultaneously, which means making some tough decisions about priorities. Thankfully, I’ve set up production for both shows outside of London, primarily at Pinewood Studios, and we’re using one additional location for both. I’ve really tried to plan things efficiently. We’ve actually finished most of the script for the Alien series and are about halfway through writing the other show. Once the scripts are locked, my role shifts – it becomes more about letting the directors and other crew take the reins.

Hulu’s Far Cry does not yet have a release date.
