2026 is shaping up to be the year of the “space Western” thanks to a number of exciting new releases. This genre blends science fiction with classic Western themes. While the Star Wars films helped make it popular, the space Western continues to thrive today.
In 2026, The Mandalorian and Grogu will return to the big screen, marking the first Star Wars theatrical release in seven years. The movie continues the story from the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, which draws heavily on classic Western themes. But Star Wars isn’t alone – following a trend that began in the 1970s, other major Hollywood films are also embracing this space Western style in 2026.
James Gunn’s new DC Universe is planning a big push with space Westerns in 2026. Two key projects, the HBO Max series Lanterns and the film Supergirl, are scheduled for release that summer. In fact, several major movies and shows throughout the rest of the year will also fit this theme, making 2026 a standout year for the space Western subgenre.
Star Wars And DC Have Major Space Western Releases In 2026
As a huge movie fan, I’m really excited for The Mandalorian and Grogu coming in May 2026! What I’ve always loved about Star Wars is how it feels like a classic Western, and it’s fascinating to learn that George Lucas was directly inspired by Japanese cinema – especially samurai films. Those films actually had a big impact on Westerns, and vice versa! That’s why Star Wars ended up feeling like a space Western/samurai hybrid. But out of everything in the Star Wars universe, The Mandalorian really feels like that blend, and I think The Mandalorian and Grogu will capture that spirit even more.
Drawing on the classic Western trope of a solitary hero and their companion – like the dynamic often seen between a lone wanderer and a young protégé – The Mandalorian and Grogu feels distinctly like a space Western. The show features a lone gunfighter, Din Djarin, navigating a dangerous galaxy filled with outlaws, echoing familiar Western themes within the Star Wars universe.
The main story of the show follows the Mandalorian and Grogu as they help restore peace to the Outer Rim, a chaotic and lawless region plagued by remnants of the old Empire and various criminals, including the Hutts. It’s a perfect example of a space Western.
The upcoming series Lanterns will be similar to the crime drama True Detective. It focuses on two members of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic police force, and will start as a gritty, investigative story before expanding to incorporate the larger science fiction world of the Green Lanterns and the DC Universe. True Detective, while not a traditional Western, often uses Western themes like flawed law enforcement officers and corruption in remote, isolated settings.
The first trailer for the DCU show Lanterns clearly shows it draws heavily from Westerns. A popular comment on the trailer’s YouTube page playfully called it “No Country for Old Lanterns,” referencing the film No Country for Old Men. The show’s visuals – a remote small town, weary law enforcement, and cowboys on horseback – strongly evoke the Western genre. Combining these elements with the show’s focus on space-based policing creates what many are calling a true “space Western.”
And then there’s Supergirl. Though it’s not a traditional space Western like Lanterns, it definitely borrows some elements from the genre. Like The Mandalorian and Grogu, the story centers around an unexpected pair – Kara and Ruthye – and features a villain, Krem, who leads a group of space outlaws. It’s clear that 2026’s major releases in both Star Wars and DC are incorporating space Western themes, and that trend continues across other titles.
Firefly’s Reboot Has Come At The Perfect Time
A new project planned for 2026 is a revival of the popular show Firefly, likely as an animated sequel. Firefly is often seen as the defining space Western of recent television, and this new installment will take place between the original series and its movie continuation, Serenity. Like many Westerns, a key part of Firefly‘s appeal is the strong sense of camaraderie and found family among its characters.
Though set in space, the world of Firefly feels a lot like the American Old West – a place with little law and order. The upcoming sequel in 2026 will continue this theme, and with several major franchises exploring the space Western style, the timing for a Firefly return couldn’t be better.
Other 2026 Big Hitters Draw On Classic Space Western Tropes
Beyond the evidence already pointing to 2026 as the year of space Westerns, several major upcoming releases also feature elements of the genre. The most prominent example is likely Dune: Part Three. The Dune series has always had Western themes, particularly with the desert planet Arrakis, which is a harsh and violent setting where the native Fremen people resist outside colonization.
As a fan, I’ve noticed that Dune really seems to be questioning the idea of a ‘white savior’ – you know, that common trope in older Westerns. And with the whole struggle over spice feeling so much like the oil conflicts we’ve seen in those same films, it’s becoming clear that Dune: Part Three will basically be another Western story, just dressed up as science fiction. It’s fascinating to see how those classic themes are being re-imagined!
Released in March 2026, Project Hail Mary quickly became one of the year’s biggest hits, ranking as the third-highest-grossing movie so far. Similar to other popular films, it shares elements of the classic Western genre. The unusual partnership between the main characters and their perilous journey into unexplored space are key reasons why Project Hail Mary can be considered a space Western at its heart.
Everything we’re seeing, including shows like Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, demonstrates a strong focus on science fiction in 2026. Several films have already proven popular with audiences this year, and upcoming releases from major franchises like Star Wars, the DC Universe, and Dune are expected to build on that success.
