A fan-favorite Pixar film is getting a new short sequel! While it won’t be a full-length movie, at least one of the original actors will be back.
Ellen DeGeneres will reprise her role as the voice of Dory in a new animated short film taking place in the world of Finding Nemo. While the story is still under wraps, and it’s not yet known which other characters will appear, production is beginning now. More information about the creative team and release date will be announced in the future.
The Finding Nemo Franchise Expands
Directed by Andrew Stanton and released in 2003, Finding Nemo tells the story of a father, Marlin (voiced by Albert Brooks), searching for his son Nemo (Alexander Gould). He’s aided on his journey by Dory (DeGeneres), a friendly but forgetful blue tang fish. The film was a huge hit, earning $940 million worldwide – about ten times its production cost. With a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Finding Nemo is widely considered one of the greatest animated movies ever made, and remains a beloved Pixar classic.
Following the success of Finding Nemo, a sequel called Finding Dory was released in 2016. Ellen DeGeneres reprised her role as the voice of Dory, and the story centered on Dory’s quest to find her parents, who were voiced by Diane Keaton and Eugene Levy. Finding Dory was a huge hit, earning over $1 billion globally on a $200 million budget, and it received a very positive 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Ellen DeGeneres Returns as Dory
Over the last ten years, Ellen DeGeneres has occasionally provided the voice for Dory in Disney theme park rides and short films. However, she’s most famous for hosting The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which ended in 2022 following some issues. DeGeneres recently returned to performing with a Netflix stand-up special in 2024, and the upcoming Finding Nemo sequel will be one of her first projects after a two-year break.
Pixar is considering making another Finding Nemo movie, following the success of the previous films. Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer, Pete Docter, recently mentioned that work on Finding Nemo 3 has begun, though details are still being developed. He indicated there are plenty of stories left to tell about life in the ocean.
“The ocean is vast, and there’s still so much left to explore,” said Docter in a Bloomberg interview. “We’re actively looking for new ideas and possibilities.”
