It’s been a lengthy journey to get Coyote vs. Acme to audiences, ever since it was first announced in 2018. Production was initially delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, but filming finally wrapped in 2022. Even after being completed and mostly edited, Warner Bros. decided to cancel its release in 2023.
The trailer for the new movie Coyote vs. Acme broke viewing records, according to data from WaveMetrix reported by Deadline. It racked up an impressive 25.6 million views within the first 24 hours of its release on Wednesday, making it the most-watched trailer for an independent family film ever.
The trailer for Coyote vs. Acme has just been released, even though the movie isn’t coming out until late summer. It’s scheduled to hit theaters on August 28th, and the early views of the trailer show people are still excited about it.
This film has broken the previous box office record held by Angel Studios’ The King of Kings. That movie, a 3D animated retelling of Jesus’ life with narration by Charles Dickens, came out last year near Easter. It earned $19.3 million domestically during its opening weekend and went on to gross $83.5 million worldwide.
If Coyote vs. Acme performs like other successful films, it could be a big hit. Ketchup Entertainment reportedly spent around $50 million to acquire the movie, meaning it needs to earn between $100 and $150 million to recoup its investment. The positive reaction to the trailer suggests it has the potential to do just that.
Success like this sends a strong signal to Warner Bros., who reportedly canceled the movie primarily for tax reasons. It wasn’t until 2025 that Ketchup stepped in to rescue the film, and it took even longer to set a release date. Therefore, the incredibly high number of trailer views is a major achievement, even before we know how well the movie will perform in theaters.
Ketchup’s last movie, The Day the Earth Blew Up, earned only $15.4 million globally when it came out in early 2025, so their new film needs to perform much better. Unlike that previous movie, Coyote vs. Acme is already generating a lot of excitement and attention.
The new movie blends animation and live-action and stars popular actors like John Cena, Will Forte, and Lana Condor. This well-known cast is expected to help Coyote vs. Acme succeed, especially since the trailer was well-received and fans are already excited.
