I’ve been following Oscar Isaac’s interviews lately, as he’s been promoting his new Netflix show, Beef. It’s been fun because a lot of the questions have steered towards his big sci-fi roles in things like Star Wars and Dune. He’s been giving some really thoughtful answers, and it’s interesting to hear his perspective on those iconic franchises.
Oscar Isaac had a bigger part in the Star Wars sequel trilogy than he did in Dune. Throughout the three Star Wars films, his role grew, even as the story focused on Kylo Ren and Rey. In The Last Jedi, we saw his character, Poe Dameron, develop from a cocky pilot into a leader, particularly alongside Vice Admiral Holdo. And in The Rise of Skywalker, the movie revealed his character’s past, showing he used to be a spice runner before joining the Resistance.
Isaac recently hinted he might be open to returning to the Star Wars universe during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. This is a shift from his previous statements, where he jokingly said he’d only come back if he needed money for a new house.
Isaac seems more willing to reprise his role in Star Wars now. While it’s still uncertain how or if he’ll officially return, a Disney+ series centered around his character, Poe Dameron, could be a great way to continue his story. It would allow the character to have a more significant focus, particularly after sharing screen time with so many others in the recent films.
Poe Dameron Was Underutilized In The Sequels, And A Show Would Make Up For This
Poe Dameron was featured in all three of the sequel trilogy films, and he actually kicked off the first one, The Force Awakens, with a thrilling chase scene as he tried to outrun Kylo Ren and the First Order. After that exciting start, he primarily played a supporting role throughout the rest of that film, as well as in The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.
The final two Star Wars sequel films largely centered on Kylo Ren and Rey, leaving characters like Finn and Poe with less to do. Because of this, many fans have proposed a film or series focused on Finn, particularly to expand on his story after Episode IX. However, Poe also deserves his own dedicated project. It’s even possible that both characters could appear in each other’s stories, given their strong connection throughout the sequels.
A Poe Dameron Series Can Tie Into Rey’s New Jedi Order Movie
A series focused on Poe Dameron could both address issues from previous Star Wars stories and lay the groundwork for future ones. It could especially connect to the currently developing New Jedi Order film. While details about that movie are scarce, it seems to center heavily on the Jedi, potentially leaving little space for characters like Poe who don’t use the Force. Currently, Lucasfilm and Disney don’t seem to be prioritizing the Rey/Jedi film.
How a series about Poe Dameron would connect to the upcoming New Jedi Order movie depends on the show’s story and where Oscar Isaac’s character goes after the sequel trilogy. There’s plenty of opportunity to develop Poe’s character further, and a series could do that while also laying the groundwork for the New Jedi Order story.
