FX’s Adaptation Of Six-Part Action Video Game Gets Script & Filming Update From Creator

FX’s new video game adaptation, Far Cry, just got a major update.

The first Far Cry game came out in 2004 and put players in a dangerous, open world as a first-person shooter. It launched a popular series where the main character has to survive and make difficult decisions. By 2019, the series had sold over 50 million copies, with Far Cry 5 becoming the best-selling game in the series, reaching over 30 million players.

Noah Hawley recently told Deadline that production on the upcoming FX series based on the Far Cry video game will start soon. He explained that once filming begins on Alien: Earth, he’ll immediately begin serious preparation for Far Cry. Instead of directly adapting a specific game, Hawley plans to expand on the story, believing that the games’ focus on action often leads players to skip important narrative moments.

What initially drew me to the Far Cry games was their anthology format – each new game tells a completely separate story. I wanted to bring that same approach to Fargo. The idea of creating a game adaptation where each season features a unique story about ordinary people pushed to their limits and forced to act in increasingly desperate ways was really exciting.

I’m not directly basing my work on any existing Far Cry games. Instead, like with projects like the Coens’ work, X-Men (with FX’s Legion), or Alien, I want to explore what a Far Cry story could be. We could also discuss how well video games translate to dramatic storytelling, as their structure isn’t always ideal for that purpose.

Video games typically progress through active gameplay, with optional cut scenes that advance the story. When adapting a game into a show, it’s crucial to recognize that focusing only on the plot—and ignoring the player’s direct involvement—can ruin the drama. If a show loses that interactive element, it won’t be successful.
