Hopefully, this will make the app a lot better and safer for everyone.
The dating app platform, owned by Match Group, is working with World – a project created by Sam Altman of OpenAI – to add a new security feature. This feature will use scans of people’s irises to verify they are real people, not bots.
After completing the check, users will receive a verification badge showing they are a real person, which they can then display on their Tinder profile.
This change is happening because people are increasingly worried about fake profiles, online deception, and romance scams on dating apps. Tinder’s new feature aims to reassure users that they’re communicating with real people, not AI-powered bots.
Tinder gives users free “boosts” for scanning their eyes
This technology verifies people are real by scanning their irises using an app or a small, orb-shaped device. It then creates a unique World ID for each person, which can be used for verification purposes.
The company initially tested the feature with Tinder in Japan and is now releasing it to a wider audience.
This announcement is part of World’s larger effort to expand its identity verification technology beyond dating apps. They’re also working with platforms like Zoom, DocuSign, Shopify, and Reddit, promoting biometric checks as a way to combat the increasing issue of AI-powered online impersonation.
The launch is expected to spark debate about privacy. To encourage adoption, Tinder will offer users who verify their identity with World ID five free “boosts,” which temporarily increase how many people see their profile.
It remains to be seen if Tinder users will actually scan their eyes, even with the offer of free features and a reduction in fake accounts.
