At this year’s Tokyo Game Show, Microsoft made a major announcement: the unveiling of Forza Horizon 6. Phil Spencer, who attended the event, discussed the company’s upcoming plans and partnerships in an interview.
In addition, the leader of Microsoft Gaming highlighted four games he believes players are eager to see brought back. These franchises are MechAssault, Crimson Skies, Blue Dragon, and Lost Odyssey. However, bringing even a few of these titles back to life might be more challenging than expected.
Windows Central has analyzed the situation carefully. Their research indicates that MechAssault, which is connected to BattleTech, faces the biggest challenges. Microsoft only holds the rights to create video games within this universe, while Topps controls other parts of the franchise, including its background story, novels, collectibles, and related products.
Because older agreements don’t include modern options like cloud technology, this results in a scenario where the brand isn’t actively developed and Microsoft simply allows other companies to use it (which is why we get new games in the MechWarrior and BattleTech franchises).
This also holds true for Crimson Skies, because the ownership of the brand rights is still uncertain. Windows Central suggests that Topps may own some of those rights. Thankfully, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge can be played on Xbox Series X/S through Backward Compatibility, which makes a potential return of the series seem more likely.
Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon have a good chance of making a comeback because their creator, Mistwalker, is still developing games. Also, both titles are playable on Xbox Series X/S through the console’s Backward Compatibility feature. Given the current popularity of Japanese role-playing games, and Microsoft’s efforts to attract Japanese gamers, it’s possible we could see these games return in the future.
