Co-op RPGs for Players Who Want More Games Like It Takes Two

Asymmetrical co-op games aren’t a new idea, but It Takes Two has really popularized the genre, especially with a new audience. The game successfully combines fun platforming challenges with a heartwarming story about a couple working through their problems, which has made Hazelight Studios well-known. It’s also sparked a lot of interest in more cooperative gaming experiences.

Lots of games let you play with friends, but it’s helpful to find one that fits what you both enjoy. Everyone has different tastes, and that’s perfectly fine! If you loved playing It Takes Two together and are looking for something different, maybe an RPG would be a good fit.

Look, there are a ton of RPGs you can play with friends these days, but finding one that really nails it – you know, a great story, fun gameplay, and keeps you hooked like ‘It Takes Two’ did – that’s tough. It’s hard to find that same magic in a different game, but it’s definitely what I’m looking for!

10. Phantasy Star Online 2

Wildin in Space

Sega has successfully brought back its classic online role-playing game, offering a fun and engaging experience for players who enjoy teaming up. Phantasy Star Online 2 is a vibrant, anime-style space adventure that’s easy to pick up and play. It offers extensive options for customizing both your character and the game world, and the combat system is straightforward. This makes it an excellent choice for players of all skill levels to play together.

While it doesn’t quite reach the storytelling heights of It Takes Two, this game still has some enjoyable moments. There’s a lot to play, and if you fondly remember the original game on the Dreamcast, it’s definitely worth checking out with friends.

9. Secret of Mana

Secret of Mana is considered one of the best action RPGs ever made, and it uniquely featured three-player cooperative gameplay. While most RPGs were designed for a single player, Secret of Mana allowed up to three players to team up – either controlled by one person, or with the help of a SNES multi-tap accessory. The ability to experience such a grand adventure with friends was incredibly appealing.

Every RPG enthusiast should experience Secret of Mana. What makes it even better is playing with friends – it’s a fantastic adventure to share with others!

8. Diablo 4

A Devil of a Time

Diablo 4, the newest installment in the popular Diablo series, is an excellent option for those who enjoy playing with friends. The game’s rich story and detailed world make it immersive, and its open design lets players explore and create their own adventures. Plus, there’s plenty of powerful gear to find and share with your team.

Whether you’re a powerful warrior teaming up with a master of the undead, or a nature-loving druid needing help with a tough boss like Duriel, Diablo 4 is the place to play. Join forces and prepare for a long adventure!

7. A Way Out

Breaking Free

Hazelight Studios proved their talent for cooperative games with A Way Out, even before creating It Takes Two. While A Way Out has a more serious and realistic tone – focusing on a prison escape – it clearly showed the team’s potential and laid the groundwork for their later successes. It remains a solid and enjoyable game on its own.

Unlike some other co-op games, A Way Out offers multiple endings. While the game is challenging and full of unexpected events, it’s a fantastic choice if you’re looking for a great cooperative experience.

6. Nobody Saves The World

Somone’s Got To Do It

This indie game, inspired by Zelda, is a stylish action-RPG focused on adventure, and it even lets you play with a friend! You play as a character called Nobody, who can transform into a bunch of unique forms – like a robot or a mermaid – each with different powers. The game features a world to explore and tough dungeons to conquer, all while teaming up with another player.

Nobody Saves the World is a delightfully chaotic and fun game, especially with a friend. It’s full of different forms to try and constantly changing worlds, making every playthrough feel fresh and unique.

5. Borderlands 2

Catch A Ride!

As a huge fan, I can tell you Borderlands 2 really lives up to the saying ‘the family that plays together, stays together’ – except replace ‘plays’ with ‘shoots and loots’! Seriously, if you’re looking for a first-person shooter with RPG elements, tons of personality, and hilarious dialogue, this is a classic you can’t beat. You can definitely have fun just exploring Pandora and causing mayhem, but it’s way better when you team up with friends to take down Handsome Jack and everything else the game throws at you.

If you want a fun night in with a friend, Borderlands 2 offers split-screen co-op, letting you and another player team up to defeat enemies. It’s a faster-paced game than It Takes Two, but it’s just as enjoyable for a different kind of cooperative experience.

4. Elden Ring

Elden Ring is a really challenging game, and honestly, I’m not very good at it. I’m so glad FromSoftware added co-op, because it’s letting me experience the game in a way I couldn’t on my own. Having a friend guide me through the Lands Between makes it much more enjoyable, even if I sometimes feel like I’m just along for the ride.

This is a pretty challenging co-op RPG, but it’s a fantastic adventure if you and a friend are ready for a tough game. If you prefer to play solo, you might get lucky and find someone online to help you out, like the famous player known as Let Me Solo Her/Him.

3. Monster Hunter Wilds

Carve off a Piece

As a huge Monster Hunter fan, I can tell you, nothing beats the rush of tracking down a monster in Wilds! This game is made to be played with friends, and Wilds delivers on that perfectly. There’s just something amazing about riding your Seikret with your buddies to take on a tough monster like a Rompopolo or Rathalos. Every fight feels exciting and really pays off. Plus, the world itself is absolutely beautiful – there are so many cool places to discover and explore, it’s incredible!

If you and your friends (even if they aren’t Palicos!) like playing cooperative action-RPG games, Monster Hunter Wilds is a great choice. It has tons of content – hundreds of hours, in fact – to keep you all entertained.

A Sci-Fi Fanstasy

If you enjoyed It Takes Two, you absolutely need to check out Split Fiction. It takes everything that made It Takes Two great and elevates it even further. With a huge range of gameplay styles and a story just as captivating as Cody and May’s, it’s an easy recommendation. Instead of focusing on a struggling marriage, Split Fiction lets you jump between the imaginative worlds created by two unique authors, offering a truly expansive experience.

Hazelight Studios created two fantastic cooperative games in a row, proving how fun and innovative this style of gameplay can be. If you loved It Takes Two, you definitely shouldn’t miss these!

1. Baldur’s Gate 3

It’s no surprise that Baldur’s Gate 3, widely considered one of the best RPGs of all time, also offers a fantastic co-op experience. The game is incredibly detailed and gives players a lot of freedom, and playing with a friend makes it even more enjoyable. Whether you’re teaming up to defeat the main villain or competing to romance a character, Baldur’s Gate 3’s co-op mode is sure to be a hit.

What makes Baldur’s Gate 3 so great is that it feels like a fantastic Dungeons & Dragons campaign you can enjoy on your own or with friends. After all, isn’t that what role-playing games are all about – playing together?
