The Last of Us actor Troy Baker says we “definitely haven’t seen the last” of Joel

Troy Baker, the well-known voice actor who played Joel in The Last of Us, has confirmed that the character will continue to appear in future projects, even if someone else voices him.

Joel Miller from The Last of Us is a hugely popular video game character, featured in two highly praised games by Naughty Dog. He’s recently gained even more recognition thanks to Pedro Pascal’s award-winning performance in the HBO television series.

Even though his character met a difficult end in both the video game and the TV show, Troy Baker, the original voice actor, believes Joel’s story isn’t over yet.

Troy Baker says The Last of Us’ Joel will return

Troy Baker, in an interview with Eurogamer, admitted it was difficult seeing his character, Joel, die in Season 2, as portrayed by Pedro Pascal. However, he believes Joel’s story isn’t over yet.

He hopes Pedro Pascal isn’t the final actor to portray Joel. He’d like to see the character explored further in different formats like television, movies, new games, and even comic books.

“I definitely know we’ve not seen the last of Joel, whether that be Naughty Dog or somebody else.”

Just because I’m hoping Troy Baker might reprise his role as Joel doesn’t mean I think he has to. He actually seems really happy that Pedro Pascal got to play Joel and do his own thing with the character, and he’s been so supportive of Pedro’s performance – which is awesome to see!

In a recent interview, Baker explained that he was hoping to see something new in Pedro Pascal’s performance that he hadn’t seen in his own portrayal of Joel. He said Pascal delivered that something in every episode. Baker praised Pascal for his careful and thoughtful handling of the character, noting that Pascal clearly loved Joel as much as he did.

He didn’t explain how he knows we haven’t seen the last of Joel, or what that might look like. While he could return in Season 3 of The Last of Us or the potential third game, it’s also possible he’ll reappear in a different way altogether.
