Games that intentionally challenge you aren’t limited to the ‘Souls-like’ genre. While Elden Ring is famously difficult, and Silksong is already known for its harshness (though many still enjoy it, and some have even completed it using a saxophone!), there was a popular indie game released eight years ago that quickly gained attention. This game didn’t focus on large worlds or extensive exploration; instead, it centered around intense boss battles presented with beautiful, hand-drawn animation reminiscent of 1930s cartoons – think classic Fleischer and Disney styles. I’m referring to Cuphead: that “difficult but fair” arcade-style game with a vintage cartoon aesthetic that we either loved playing ourselves, or enjoyed watching others struggle with.
Cuphead marks 8 years of brutal toon battles
You won’t believe it, but Cuphead came out eight years ago in 2017! To mark the occasion, the team at Studio MDHR – those amazing two brothers who even risked their homes to fund the game – are hosting a small celebration. They’re offering a lot of free items all week long. The news was posted on Monday, September 29th, on X, so if you’re interested, you should act quickly, as the event only lasts until this Sunday.

Each day, they’re giving away 8 download codes for Cuphead and The Delicious Last Course, and you get to choose the platform you prefer. To enter the contest, just follow their account, share this post, and reply with “Happy Birthday Cuphead! #CupheadTurns8”.
That’s not all! They’re also giving away special art books, and even more goodies are being revealed today. It’s definitely worth visiting every day to see what other prizes you can get.
