The long-awaited live-action Gundam movie is officially happening! Netflix and Legendary have confirmed that Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo will star in the film, with production now underway in Queensland, Australia. It’s no longer just a rumor – the cast has been announced!
After a long wait, excitement is building for the project, especially among anime fans who are often cautious about live-action remakes. Recent news is encouraging, though – the film now has a confirmed cast, a scheduled start to production, and a better sense of the story director and writer Jim Mickle is creating.

The upcoming live-action Gundam series will focus on a love story between two people caught on opposing sides of a long war between Earth and its space colonies. Actors Sweeney and Centineo will play the rival pilots at the heart of this conflict, hinting that the series will explore the serious themes of war, beliefs, and the impact on individuals, rather than simply focusing on action and special effects, as the Gundam franchise has often done.
The most promising aspect of this news is that the live-action Gundam seems to grasp what truly makes the series special. While the robots are what initially draw people in, the franchise has always been about much more than just machines.
The movie now has a more extensive cast than initially known. In addition to stars Dylan Sweeney and Joseph Centineo, the film features Jason Isaacs, Michael Mando, Shioli Kutsuna, Jackson White, Javon “Wanna” Walton, Nonso Anozie, Gemma Chua-Tran, Ida Brooke, and Oleksandr Rudynskyi.

Isaacs and Mando are strong additions to the cast, and Kutsuna has experience with large franchises, which will be useful for a movie aiming to blend serious military themes with broader audience appeal. While character details are still under wraps, the large cast size hints at a complex story with many players, rather than a simple one focused on just two characters.
It’s also important to note Mickle’s role in this project. He’s directing and writing after the success of Sweet Tooth, a series praised for its imaginative world-building and unique storytelling style – often surpassing even large, established franchises. While that doesn’t automatically mean the Gundam adaptation will be equally successful, particularly given how passionate the existing fans are, it does suggest the show will have a distinct creative vision.
We still don’t have all the details about the upcoming movie. Netflix hasn’t announced when it will be released, or specifically which part of the Gundam universe it will be based on. While some reports suggest the movie might take inspiration from the Universal Century timeline – specifically the realistic military style of Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team – Netflix hasn’t officially confirmed this.
The biggest news is that the Gundam movie is officially in production. With the cast set and filming started, Netflix seems to be investing heavily in building a major franchise around it.
