8 TV Action Heroes Better Than Jack Reacher

Let’s be honest, by 2026, Alan Ritchson is Jack Reacher, and Reacher is the king of TV action. A few others are in the ballpark, but none quite hit the mark. He’s got the build, the bravery, and thankfully, a solid team to help him out when he can’t be in multiple places at once. It really feels like we’re all just watching his world unfold. But it got me thinking – before Reacher, there were definitely men and women who could have gone head-to-head with him, or even handled dangerous situations more effectively.

We’re looking at action heroes from the 1980s through the 2010s to see who could challenge Jack Reacher. Characters from the 1970s probably wouldn’t fit—most action stars back then were more comedic than serious. So, who could realistically take Reacher’s place and still deliver an exciting, engaging performance?

Lucas Hood

‘Banshee’ (2013 – 2016)

Imagine you’re John Smith, just released from prison and unsure of your future. Then, while at a bar, you witness the murder of Lucas Hood, a man who was supposed to become the sheriff of a small town. Nobody knows what Hood looked like, so you make a daring decision: you take his place and pretend to be the new sheriff.

Anthony Starr, famous for his role as Homelander in The Boys, plays Lucas Hood, a detective who prefers taking down criminals with force instead of arrests. He’s very effective, quickly bringing order to the town of Banshee. Many criminals end up with broken jaws, and some don’t survive his methods. While his reckless behavior can be dangerous, it’s also what makes him so compelling. Don’t miss the unforgettable fight scene in the prison!

Cordell Walker

‘Walker, Texas Ranger’ (1993 – 2001)

It was unusual for action movie stars of the 1980s and 90s to appear on television, but Chuck Norris starred as Cordell Walker for eight years while continuing to make films. Like his other roles, Walker is a no-nonsense character – a Texas Ranger based in the Dallas-Fort Worth area who’s just as likely to deliver a signature roundhouse kick to a drug kingpin as to a common thief.

Chuck Norris isn’t just highly skilled in martial arts like Karate, Judo, and Taekwondo – he also has traditional Cherokee tracking abilities that make finding criminals a breeze. He’s incredibly resilient, surviving unbelievable situations like falls, stabbings, gunshots, and even explosions. It might seem like an exaggeration, but this is Chuck Norris we’re talking about – and the internet legends speak for themselves.

Nikita Mears

‘Nikita’ (2010 – 2013)

I definitely had a schoolgirl crush on Nikita (or Maggie Q!) growing up, but that’s not why I think she’s so great. She’s a truly skilled operative – fearless when facing larger opponents and incredibly proficient at fighting in heels. In fact, she might even be a better spy than James Bond.

Her final words will be a cry for me, she promises. You’ll laugh at her dramatic pronouncements, but cheer when she finally defeats her long-time enemies. This story is about a woman fueled by vengeance against the group that made her what she is. It’s a slow burn, but isn’t that the best kind?

Angus MacGyver

‘MacGyver’ (1985 – 1992)

Let’s be honest, the recent MacGyver reboot doesn’t compare to the original series with Richard Dean Anderson. Some people complain it’s unbelievable, but the truly unbelievable part is that Angus MacGyver didn’t win a Nobel Prize! Seriously, he could build a bomb out of toothpaste and collard greens – only Angus MacGyver could pull that off.

MacGyver isn’t a fan of guns and believes in stricter gun control, but he’s incredibly resourceful when it comes to stopping criminals. He almost never kills, preferring to simply incapacitate them. Beyond his skills in a fight, MacGyver is a remarkably talented individual – he can paint, play guitar, and even speak six languages. He’s a true modern Renaissance man.

Frank Castle

‘The Punisher’ (2017 – 2019)

Frank Castle is a former Marine who became a vigilante after his family was tragically killed. Driven by grief, he now dedicates his life to punishing criminals in New York City. He’s known for his extreme brutality and lack of sympathy, delivering harsh and relentless punishment that can be unsettling to watch.

I have to say, Jon Bernthal absolutely nailed the role. Past actors who’ve played this Marvel character always seemed a little overwhelmed, like the part was too much for them. But Bernthal? He becomes the Punisher. Give him any weapon – a knife, a gun, even just a stick – and he’s completely believable. And it’s a small detail, but I loved that they showed him actually treating his own injuries – it made him feel so much more real. It’s a real shame the show didn’t last longer, but I’m thrilled to hear he’ll be showing up in the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie!

Ah Sam

‘Warrior’ (2019 – 2023)

If you enjoy martial arts shows with impressive action sequences, this one is a great choice. It’s based on an idea originally created by Bruce Lee for a television series called Ah Sahm. The show, which premiered in the 2010s, centers on Ah Sahm (played by Andrew Koji), a skilled martial artist who comes to America during a period of intense gang conflict, hoping to find his lost sister. He quickly becomes entangled in the dangerous world of these gang wars.

Ah Sahm immediately earns your respect. He’s generally calm and positive, though he has a hidden fiery side. Like Lee, he’s a master of Jeet Kune Do and rarely loses a fight. Be sure to watch the scene where he skillfully uses nunchucks against a group of Irish gangsters.

Baracus

‘The A-Team’ (1983 – 1987)

A truly memorable action hero rises above even a group of other tough characters. Mr. T famously played Baracus, a member of the A-Team – a band of former Special Forces soldiers who were wrongly accused of a crime during the Vietnam War. Instead of hiding from the law, these men became mercenaries in Los Angeles, using their training to help people and fight injustice.

A truly great action hero needs to look the part, and Mr. T’s distinctive mohawk gives Baracus instant star power. But he’s more than just a stylish character – Baracus is a skilled weapons expert and, like MacGyver, can build amazing things from everyday objects. He’s such a good driver, you could even call him the Baracus version of Dom Toretto! He’s exactly the teammate you’d want… unless you’re on a plane. Baracus has a severe fear of flying, known as Pteromechanophobia.

Jack Bauer

’24’ (2001 – 2012)

Jack Bauer is known for yelling at his friend and tech expert, Chloe O’Brien, whenever things go wrong on a mission. As a skilled federal agent in the Counterterrorist Unit, he’s constantly working to stop terrorist attacks, taking down bad guys as he goes. Unlike some heroes, he typically resolves the crisis within 24 hours.

Bauer is undoubtedly the superior hero. Beyond his incredible action sequences – whether he’s fighting multiple opponents or breaking free from imprisonment – we get a glimpse into his personal life, which is more compelling than most other heroes’. He’s a great father, but his love life is consistently troubled, with each of his partners tragically meeting an untimely end. It’s understandable why President Heller thinks he might be cursed! But regardless of any supposed curse, Bauer is exceptionally skilled at his job.

Who would you count on to protect you?
