Plans for a live-action Gundam movie have been in development since 2018, and now the project is moving forward with Sydney Sweeney, known for her role in Euphoria, and Noah Centineo, who starred in the Street Fighter movie.
Gundam is a popular Japanese series that began with the anime Mobile Suit Gundam in 1979. At its heart, it’s a space adventure about a huge war between Earth and its space colonies, with battles fought by pilots controlling giant robots.
The new film has a wealth of source material to draw from, thanks to the franchise’s extensive history of over 50 TV shows and movies spanning many different time periods. Gundam is widely credited with popularizing the ‘mecha’ genre and sparking a global fascination with giant robots.
Given how well other giant robot movies like Transformers, Pacific Rim, and Godzilla have done, it’s a bit surprising it’s taken so long for a live-action Gundam film to happen. (We’re not even going to mention the old TV movie, G-Saviour!) Thankfully, Netflix is now making it a reality with a strong cast.

Netflix began filming its live-action Gundam movie in Australia on April 20th, starring Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo.
The streamer also revealed a broad synopsis for the project which reads: “As shifting allegiances and a growing threat set them on a collision course for one another. They’re pulled into a high-stakes race across the stars that could define the fate of humanity. With awe-inspiring battles, intimate human emotion, and an epic cinematic scale, this is Gundam like it’s been seen before.”
The film is directed by Jim Mickle, who also created the show Sweet Tooth. It features a talented cast including Jason Isaacs, known from Harry Potter, and Javon Walton, who starred in Euphoria. Michael Mando will return as Scorpion, as seen in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Here’s a complete list of the actors involved:
- Jason Isaacs

The announcement clarified that the upcoming live-action Gundam movie will feature an original story within the Gundam universe, and won’t be based on any existing manga. While Netflix has had success adapting anime and manga into live-action with shows like One Piece, it remains to be seen how well the Gundam movie will perform.
