Tom Cruise Confirms May 2026 Re-Release of ‘Top Gun’ & ‘Top Gun: Maverick’

Tom Cruise is poised to return to the big screen, continuing his decades-long streak of successful films. His next project is Digger, a unique role for the action star where he’ll be nearly unrecognizable thanks to a new appearance and Southern accent. He plays Digger Rockwell, a wealthy oilman whose company accidentally causes an environmental catastrophe with potentially global consequences, even risking nuclear war. The film boasts a stellar cast, including John Goodman as the President of the United States, Riz Ahmed as the President’s aide, and Jesse Plemons and Michael Stuhlbarg in supporting roles.

For the past ten years, Tom Cruise has been best known for playing Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible films, which concluded in 2025 with Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning. Despite the franchise’s success, another one of his movies may have actually been even more popular recently. Now, that film – and the one before it – are getting a re-release, complete with special showings.

Tom Cruise has announced that both Top Gun (1986) and Top Gun: Maverick (2022) will return to theaters for one week starting May 13th. This special re-release is to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the original Top Gun, which premiered on May 16, 1986. The first Top Gun film was a huge success, becoming the highest-grossing movie of 1986 and earning nearly $360 million worldwide.

After 36 years, Top Gun: Maverick was a massive success, earning over $1.5 billion worldwide. It was the second-highest-grossing film of 2022, behind James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water, and remains one of the highest-grossing movies ever made, currently ranking at number 15 all-time.
