The owner of a mustard factory was sentenced to prison for illegally dumping waste into a New Hampshire river over several years, according to authorities.
Charles Santich, who owns Old Dutch Mustard Co., will spend 18 months in federal prison and pay a $250,000 fine after admitting to breaking clean water laws. His company was also ordered to pay $1.5 million as a penalty for its involvement in polluting the water.
Prosecutors say Santich intentionally released harmful wastewater from his mustard and vinegar factory into the Souhegan River without the required permission, breaking environmental regulations.
Mustard company polluted river with secret underground pipe
Authorities state the pollution wasn’t a mistake. Records show Santich intentionally created a secret network of underground pipes to illegally dump waste into the river and avoid environmental inspections.
In 2017, he reportedly hired an excavation company to extend the pipe behind the facility.
For years, the condiment company is said to have illegally dumped waste, and employees claim they were told to help or face unemployment. The company’s owner, Santich, is also accused of lying to authorities and providing false records to hide the pollution.
The environment suffered considerable damage. According to investigators, the wastewater caused lasting harm to the river, leading to a decline in the number of fish.
As a fan who’s been following this case, it seems like the punishment really fits the crime. From what I understand, authorities believe this wasn’t just a mistake – it was a calculated attempt to skirt environmental rules and cover up something they were doing illegally. It’s pretty serious stuff.
