I’m so glad Only Murders in the Building is back with the newest episode of its fifth season! Things are really starting to get intense as we try to figure out who killed Lester and Nicky. Now that we’re past the halfway point of the season, Hulu’s amazing murder-mystery series isn’t holding back. It’s been really fun following Charles, Oliver, and Mabel as they dig deeper into the case. With two murders that seem connected and so many people who could be the killer, the mystery is still wide open. And honestly, Episode 6 just made everything even *more* complicated. I can’t wait to see what happens next!
As a follower of Only Murders in the Building, I was on the edge of my seat when Charles, Oliver, and Mabel had to bring in Detective Williams with all their evidence. They just couldn’t investigate Jay, Bash, and Camilla themselves anymore – those three billionaires now control the company making our favorite podcast! But, true to form, they couldn’t resist digging into the mystery, and they found a new clue: a name, “Tommy the Tongue.” Luckily, with Williams’ help, they figured out that “Tommy the Tongue” wasn’t a person at all, but a business registered at Lester’s widow’s house. And the biggest shock? She was meeting with Sophia Caccimelio at the end of the last episode! This week’s episode starts right there, with that cliffhanger, and finally reveals what was really going on between those two widows.
Only Murders in the Building Season 5, Episode 6 Recap
Only Murders in the Building presents one of its most touching episodes with “Flatbush,” which reveals more about the mysterious Oliver Putnam (and sheds light on why he is the way he is). Loretta is back, deeply upset after losing her apartment in a fire that officials call an accident, but which was likely intentionally set. To take her mind off things, Loretta joins Oliver in investigating, and they visit Lester’s widow, Lorraine.
The investigation leads them back to Oliver’s childhood neighborhood of Flatbush, Brooklyn, prompting him to remember both happy and difficult times from his youth. While emotional flashbacks usually belong to Charles and Mabel, this episode gives us a glimpse into young Oliver’s life, showing how he moved between many foster homes, always searching for a family to take him in. He only ever truly felt a sense of belonging at the theater and in the Arconia, but his growing connection with Loretta helps him realize that home isn’t a place-it’s about having someone who loves you for who you are. Later in the episode, Oliver gives a powerful monologue about his first experience with theater, reminding viewers why Martin Short has earned so much praise for his work in Only Murders in the Building throughout the years.
Oliver’s story arc in this episode is compelling enough that it briefly distracts viewers from the central mystery as they become invested in his past. However, the investigation quickly refocuses when Oliver and Loretta question Lorraine and Sophia at the Flatbush Theater. We discover Loretta has a solid alibi – she was teaching children opera at the theater the night her husband died. Sophia appears less like a suspect too, explaining she only visited Lorraine in the previous episode to deliver Lester’s final paycheck from her late husband. Similar to Oliver, though, we still have some doubts about Sophia’s character by the episode’s end, largely due to her connection with Charles. It’s a cleverly woven narrative that keeps you guessing, even as pieces fall into place. The suspense is palpable.
It’s wild watching Oliver and Loretta dig up the past and even accuse grieving widows, while Charles and I are actually trying to figure out what happened to Lester! When Charles isn’t busy chatting with someone on his new dating app – this woman named Priscilla – we discovered someone stole the dismembered finger right out of his apartment! With Thé‘s help, we started looking through LESTR’s security footage, and things got really strange. Someone had covered up key moments with fake recordings – both the night Lester died and the night the finger was stolen had missing parts. That’s when we found out who was behind it all: Sebastian “Bash” Steed’s company actually *owns* the security camera technology at the Arconia! And it gets worse – Bash also owns “Last Gasp,” the dating app Charles is using! The episode ends with Priscilla revealing herself to be Bash himself – seriously, the worst catfishing ever!
As the story unfolds, Only Murders in the Building gives us some clues about what’s coming up later this season. One of the biggest surprises is that Oliver is actually going to leave the Arconia. The show has been leading to this moment, with Oliver wrestling with whether to sell his apartment for a lot of money. After a heartfelt connection with Loretta in this episode, Oliver makes his decision and tells Mabel. I think we’ll learn who made the offer in future episodes-and it’s likely that one of the wealthy billionaires is involved.
Lorraine shares that police discovered a tiny wooden bird with Lester when he died – the very same one we’ve glimpsed in earlier memories. We also see a lot more of Beanie Feldstein’s character, Thé, in “Flatbush,” as she and Mabel resolve their differences and understand how their friendship fell apart. It appears likely we’ll see more of Thé as she becomes increasingly involved in the investigation over the final four episodes of the season.
Jordan’s Murder Board – The Mystery Gets Twistier
The latest episode definitely complicates things in the investigation of who killed Lester and Nicky. In past recaps, I’ve shared a few ideas about potential suspects this season. At first, I suspected the Caccimelio brothers, but they haven’t been featured much lately, making me reconsider that theory. The ending of this week’s episode strongly suggests that Bash is connected to the murders. It’s clear he helped cover up what happened the night Lester and Nicky died. However, it feels too easy to assume Bash is the killer. Actually, I’m hesitant to believe that any of the three billionaires will be revealed as the murderer-it just seems too predictable. If I’ve learned anything from Only Murders in the Building, the ultimate reveal will be much more surprising.
I believe the killer is likely someone in a position of power, but not Jay, Bash, or Camilla. This person would need to know about the Velvet Room, have the means to send a finger to Charles’s apartment and then have it stolen, and be able to persuade Bash to delete security footage. Currently, the evidence seems to be leading towards Keegan-Michael Key’s Mayor Tillman. While Tillman hasn’t been a major focus this season, he appears occasionally to maintain a presence. Those familiar with murder mysteries know to be suspicious of politicians who are eager to be re-elected, particularly when corruption and secret criminal activity are involved. Given that such a well-known actor like Keegan-Michael Key is playing Mayor Tillman, it’s reasonable to expect him to have a significant role in future episodes. Pay close attention to his upcoming scenes, and look for any hints that might suggest he was the one who killed Lester and Nicky.
