H.G. Wells remains one of the most well-known classic authors, largely because he wrote so much and many of his stories have been successfully turned into movies, radio programs, and television series. His 1897 science fiction novel is a prime example, having been adapted multiple times – even by famous directors like Steven Spielberg.
Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds will be available to stream on Hulu starting April 1st. The 2005 movie was a major box office hit and remains the most well-known version of the story. More recently, Amazon MGM Studios attempted to create a similar success, but…
War of the Worlds Was a Divisive Film
The story centers on Ray Ferrier, a longshoreman, who finds himself unexpectedly responsible for his children during an alien invasion. He fights to keep them safe and get them back to their mother as cities are destroyed by massive alien war machines.
I was absolutely captivated by this movie, and Tom Cruise was incredible in the main role! He shared the screen with such talented actors – Dakota Fanning, Miranda Otto, and Tim Robbins – and Morgan Freeman’s voiceover just added so much depth. It was directed by the brilliant Steven Spielberg, who worked with screenwriters Josh Friedman and his longtime partner, David Koepp, to create something truly special.
Despite a $132 million production budget, War of the Worlds earned over $603.9 million worldwide, making it a big financial win for Paramount Pictures, along with DreamWorks, Amblin Entertainment, and Cruise/Wagner Productions. However, the film remains a subject of debate and controversy even today.
The film was well-received by critics and audiences alike. It currently has a 76% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has received numerous awards, including several Academy Award nominations.
Despite being called one of the most intense alien movies ever made, the film only received a 42% approval rating from viewers. Many were disappointed with the ending, the fate of the character Robbie (played by Justin Chatwin), and the role of Rachel (Dakota Fanning).
A new adaptation of War of the Worlds came out in 2025, but it wasn’t related to the earlier film directed by Spielberg. Starring Ice Cube, the movie faced delays due to the pandemic and was ultimately released several years later, making the story feel less relevant to current events. The film depicts Ice Cube’s character witnessing an apocalypse unfold on a work screen. Critics and audiences didn’t respond well, giving it a 4% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 20% from viewers.
Steven Spielberg Is Making a Return to Sci-Fi
Steven Spielberg has a long-standing fascination with aliens, a theme explored in several of his films like War of the Worlds and E.T. This year, the acclaimed director is revisiting this beloved sci-fi territory with a new film called Disclosure Day.
A new science fiction movie explores what would happen if people discovered aliens are living secretly among us. Directed by Steven Spielberg and written by David Koepp – who previously collaborated with Spielberg on Jurassic Park and War of the Worlds – the film features a cast including Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, Colman Domingo, Wyatt Russell, Chavo Guerrero Jr., and Elizabeth Marvel.
War of the Worlds premieres on Hulu on May 1.
