A new rancher, Tom Weaver (Chris Mulkey), appears in the Yellowstone spin-off Marshals, but he’s very different from John Dutton (Kevin Costner) and doesn’t share the same principles. Though Yellowstone concluded with its fifth season in 2024, the Dutton family’s story lives on in Marshals, with Luke Grimes returning as Kayce Dutton.
In the new series following Yellowstone, Kayce joins the US Marshals and teams up again with his friend Pete “Cal” Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green). Although Marshals currently has the lowest critic score of any show in the Yellowstone universe, it’s become the most-watched program on television in April 2026. Despite this, Yellowstone remains a hugely popular franchise, even though its central figure, John Dutton, is no longer in charge.
Kevin Costner’s Legacy As John Dutton Is Paramount To Yellowstone
The television show Yellowstone concluded in December 2024 as Kevin Costner left the series. This followed disagreements with the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan, leading to his character being removed from the storyline. Many Yellowstone fans were disappointed by the departure of Costner, who played a central role as John Dutton in the popular neo-Western drama.
John’s family history was deeply connected to their vast Montana ranch, the largest in the state. Their roots in Paradise Valley went back to the late 1800s, and the story of their journey—similar to the Oregon Trail—is depicted in the television series 1883, a prequel to Yellowstone.
For generations, since 1883, the Dutton family has risked everything to safeguard their land in the American West. However, this ends when Kayce Dutton sells the ranch to Thomas Rainwater and the Broken Rock Tribe, returning the land to the Indigenous people who originally owned it.
Honestly, watching Kayce, I felt like he was finally trying to escape the cycle of violence by wanting to sell the ranch – it’s like he’s tired of always having to defend it. But it’s complicated, because he’s still getting pulled into dealing with old family feuds for his dad. And then you have this new rancher, Tom Weaver, showing up in Paradise Valley, and he’s basically the opposite of everything John Dutton believes in. It creates such interesting tension in Yellowstone.
Tom Weaver Takes Over As Yellowstone’s Foremost Rancher In Marshals
In the series Marshals, Tom Weaver is introduced as the leading rancher in Paradise Valley, first appearing in Season 1, Episode 4. He owns a ranch locally and becomes friendly with Kayce after being rescued from a helicopter crash. However, John Dutton initially distrusts Weaver simply because he’s not a long-time resident of the area.
I’m really getting into how Tom and Kayce are working together! It was cool to see Weaver help John out at East Camp, which gave John a good excuse to visit in the latest episode of Marshals. In “Family Business,” Tom was talking about how he’s updating the ranch, and it’s pretty different from the old ways John believes in. It’s interesting because Tom seems to be following in John’s footsteps in some ways, but he’s also challenging how things have always been done.
Tom Weaver is more strategic and uses technology more effectively than John Dutton did, even hiring a team of experts in agriculture to help run his ranch. Though Kayce was raised believing in traditional methods, Tom points out that those methods ultimately led to the Yellowstone Ranch’s decline.
Kayce believes the ranching lifestyle itself is the greatest benefit, but Tom disagrees, pointing out his investors have a different perspective. Tom explains he manages each head of cattle as a valuable individual asset, outlining a modern and potentially unifying approach to successful ranching.
Kayce still has a chance to show Tom how traditional ranching practices can fit into his modern business approach. However, tensions rise when Weaver makes an offer to purchase East Camp, causing Kayce to cut their dinner short. While Yellowstone demonstrated the challenges of maintaining the “old ways,” Tom’s new methods seem to abandon the very lifestyle the show celebrated.
