Though it wasn’t a huge hit when it came out in 1999, Galaxy Quest has steadily gained a dedicated following over the years. The film is a playful spoof of Star Trek, starring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, and Alan Rickman. It earned about $90.7 million at the box office with a $45 million budget, making it profitable and receiving generally positive reviews. However, despite its success, a sequel was never made.
Some modern viewers say that Galaxy Quest was simply ahead of its time.
Since it first came out, the film has gained a large and dedicated fanbase. This popularity led to a 2019 documentary, Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary, which tells the story of the movie’s fans over the past twenty years.
Fans have been hoping for a sequel to Galaxy Quest for years, but so far, there’s only been talk and guesses. A Galaxy Quest TV show has been in the works for a while, but it might never actually get made.
However, the movie did get two comic book follow-ups that many fans may have missed.
The Journey Continues
Following the success of the Galaxy Quest movie, IDW Publishing created two comic book series that continued the adventures of the crew from the spaceship NSEA-Protector. The first was a five-issue miniseries called Galaxy Quest: Global Warning, released in 2008. It was written by Scott Lobdell and illustrated by Ilias Kyriazis, and the story is about…
It took several years after the original series ended for fans to get more stories. But in 2015, IDW Publishing revived the franchise with Galaxy Quest: The Journey Continues, written by Erik Burnham and illustrated by Nacho Arranz. This new comic explored the consequences of the crew’s actions from the movie, showing what happened afterward in the galaxy.
Both book series are rare now, and when they do appear for sale, they’re usually quite expensive. This shows there’s still strong interest in expanding the story of Galaxy Quest.
What Is The State Of The Galaxy Quest Franchise?
For years, fans have hoped for a sequel to Galaxy Quest, but it’s never come together. The death of Alan Rickman in 2016 would be deeply felt if the movie were made. Adding to the uncertainty, a series that was in development at Paramount+ is now stalled due to recent changes at the studio.
Fans clearly want to see more of Galaxy Quest, and several of the original actors, like Sam Rockwell, have said they’d be happy to come back. While it’s uncertain what the future holds for the series, the story didn’t end with the original movie thanks to the continuation in the comics.
