Be warned, this discusses spoilers for Absolute Batman #19. Many fans were surprised when the Justice League Unlimited episode “Epilogue” revealed that Terry McGinnis, the star of Batman Beyond, was actually Bruce Wayne’s biological son. This was explained through a secret government project called “Project Batman Beyond,” created to ensure Batman’s continued existence. However, this twist proved controversial because it felt unnecessarily complicated and diminished Terry’s identity as an independent hero.
One of the most debated changes to Batman’s story is the revelation that Terry McGinnis’s son is actually Bruce Wayne’s child. This plot point is rarely mentioned in Batman Beyond comics, and many fans don’t even consider it part of the official story. It’s therefore surprising to see DC’s Absolute Batman seemingly update this controversial twist. However, given the quality of Absolute Batman so far, it has the potential to handle this storyline much more effectively.
How Absolute Batman Is Modernizing Batman Beyond’s Biggest Twist
In Absolute Batman #19, after Martha Wayne disappeared and Gotham City descended into chaos, Commissioner Gordon investigated the escalating events and discovered a shocking truth about what was happening. However, before he could reveal it, Scarecrow induced intense paranoia in Gordon, leading him to tragically fall to his death. Before this happened, Gordon managed to give Bruce Wayne a file labeled “Project: Batman,” which included a page referencing a past incident involving Bruce at the zoo.
The new comic series, centered around a secretive project called “Project: Batman,” shares striking similarities with the “Batman Beyond” storyline, where Amanda Waller attempted to completely control Terry McGinnis’ life to create a new Batman. Given the obvious connections, it appears “Absolute Batman” intends to reveal that Bruce Wayne’s entire life – even events like his father’s death – was carefully planned to ensure he would become Batman.
How something like this could happen is a mystery, but there are a couple of interesting possibilities. One idea is that the Court of Owls intentionally guided Bruce Wayne to become Batman, particularly since Martha Wayne is connected to them in this version of the story. If not the Court, then the Joker from the Absolute Universe might be pulling the strings – he’s previously shown a tendency to support both sides of a conflict to benefit himself. It’s all speculation for now, but if this is where the Absolute Batman storyline is headed, it could all make sense surprisingly quickly.
Absolute Batman Can Do Batman Beyond’s Big Twist Way Better Than The DCAU
The possibility of Absolute Batman bringing back the most debated plot point from Batman Beyond seems wild, but it could actually be an improvement over how it was handled in the original animated series. The initial twist—revealing Terry McGinnis’s biological father—was softened by the fact that Amanda Waller didn’t take further action and that Terry still developed his own identity. However, many fans felt it didn’t add anything meaningful to the story and even detracted from it, and presenting it as positive only reinforced that negative view.
As a fan, I’m really excited about how Absolute Batman simplifies the idea of Bruce being manipulated into becoming Batman – it makes the story much clearer. What I love even more is that it presents this manipulation as genuinely awful for Bruce, which is what many of us have been hoping for from a Batman Beyondstyle story for over two decades. Plus, it seems like the story will finally have the space to really dig into the consequences of Project: Batman. Honestly, it all points to Absolute Batman* being a really strong direction for the character.
Given how much Absolute Batman focuses on reimagining the core ideas of Batman, it’s actually a perfect fit for updating the controversial concept from Batman Beyond. While some fans might dislike it, this approach could be surprisingly effective for the series, and hopefully future issues will demonstrate that potential.
