As a fan, I was thrilled to hear that Project Hail Mary is doing so well in theaters! Apparently, because so many people are going to see it on the big screen, Amazon MGM Studios has decided to keep it exclusive to cinemas for a while longer. It’s great news for those of us who really want to experience it the way it was meant to be seen – and it means we won’t be able to stream it anytime soon, which I’m totally okay with!

This is probably good news for both movie theaters and people who still want to watch the film on the big screen – maybe even a second or third time.
Studio Announcement and Theatrical Extension
Christopher Miller, one of the film’s directors, shared that MGM has decided to keep Project Hail Mary exclusively in theaters for a longer period. He posted on social media that the movie is best experienced on the big screen, and it will be returning to IMAX theaters for one week starting this weekend. He encouraged viewers to go see it with friends and family, calling it a shared experience.
Yesterday, we shared that MGM has decided to keep PROJECT HAIL MARY in theaters for a longer run, so it won’t be available to stream just yet. They believe this is a film best experienced on the big screen, and it will be returning to IMAX theaters for one week starting this weekend!

Based on Andy Weir’s 2021 novel, Project Hail Mary stars Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, a science teacher who must work with an alien to save Earth from a dying sun. Viewers have praised the film’s realistic science, exciting story, and optimistic themes. It currently has a very positive ‘Most Excellent’ rating of 88% from over 220 users on the review site Criticless.
Since it was released in March, Project Hail Mary has earned $517 million around the world. With audiences realizing it’s not coming to streaming services anytime soon, its box office numbers are expected to keep growing.
Box Office Performance and Audience Response
The success of Project Hail Mary is particularly notable when you consider other recent big movies. Netflix’s Ted Sarandos recently told a Senate committee that Superman, directed by James Gunn, had a brief run in theaters because it didn’t perform well. This highlights that when a movie does succeed, it can also change how things are done.
Even movies that do well in theaters are becoming available for rental or purchase online just a month after they come out. For instance, Scream 7, which had record-breaking ticket sales for the series, was available digitally only 31 days after its theatrical release. Project Hail Mary will likely move from digital rental/purchase to streaming on MGM+ and Prime Video eventually, but there’s no confirmed date for that yet.
As a movie fan, I’m really encouraged to see studios like Paramount Skydance and Universal planning to keep films in theaters for longer. It’s great that Amazon MGM Studios is jumping on board with this trend – it feels like a win for everyone who loves the cinema experience!
Industry Context and Theatrical Strategy
The choice to avoid immediately releasing Project Hail Mary on streaming isn’t just about following what other companies are doing. It’s a smart business move based on how excited audiences are about the film, and it reflects comments star Ryan Gosling made to viewers before a recent IMAX showing.

Gosling explained that he received the script six years ago and immediately knew it was a huge undertaking—possibly the most ambitious project of his career. Despite seeming impossible, he felt it was too good to pass up. Now, six years later, the film is finished and in theaters. He emphasized that it’s the filmmakers’ responsibility to create compelling content that makes going to the cinema worthwhile, not the audience’s job to keep theaters afloat.
As long as people still go to the movies, film studios will likely keep experimenting with how long a movie plays in theaters before becoming available to stream at home. The success of Project Hail Mary is reminding Hollywood that certain films are best experienced in a theater first, and then enjoyed at home later.
