Apple TV+’s sci-fi thriller, which many consider a hidden gem, is getting a significant boost before its comeback in 2026.
As a critic, I’ve definitely noticed Apple TV becoming a real powerhouse for science fiction. Shows like Severance and Pluribus have really put them on the map – Severance racked up an incredible 41 Emmy nominations, winning 10, and Pluribus broke records as their most-watched series ever. But those aren’t the only gems Apple TV has to offer in the sci-fi genre; they’re consistently delivering high-quality content.
According to Blake Crouch, the creator and showrunner of Apple TV+’s sci-fi thriller Dark Matter, the second season has finished post-production with the final episode now mixed. He explained that the season took eight months to complete because it’s much larger in scope than a typical TV season – more like five movies combined. He shared the news in a recent post.
The Apple TV series is based on a novel written by its creator and showrunner. The story centers on Jason Dessen, a physicist played by Joel Edgerton, who finds himself in a different reality. He must navigate multiple universes to return to his own life, while also facing a version of himself from another reality who is attempting to steal his place.
The first season of Dark Matter covered the entire plot of the original book in nine episodes. Now, season two will explore a completely new story, expanding beyond the source material for both book readers and viewers of the show. The new season premieres on August 28th, and early previews confirm the return of familiar faces including Jason, his wife Daniela, their son Charlie, and characters played by Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, and Amanda Brugel.
I’ve been really into Apple TV+’s Severance and Pluribus lately, but I recently checked out Dark Matter and was pleasantly surprised! It hasn’t gotten quite as much buzz, but the reviews are generally very good. It’s sitting at 81% from critics and 80% with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, which is solid. Alex Harrison at ScreenRant practically gave it a perfect score – a nine out of ten! They really praised how the show manages to be both huge in scope and deeply personal, and they especially highlighted Joel Edgerton’s performance. Apparently, he’s amazing at playing all these different versions of Jason, conveying both warmth and a hidden darkness just with his facial expressions.
The second season of Dark Matter will consist of 10 episodes, starting August 28th. This continues a strong year for sci-fi on Apple TV+, which also features new seasons of For All Mankind, Star City, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and Silo.
