Open world games are loved because they let players do almost anything, so it might seem strange to then restrict them with character classes. But classes don’t always limit gameplay – in fact, they can encourage players to explore even more by creating different types of characters and extending playtime.
These games all make excellent use of their character class systems. Whether they offer a wide range of traditional classes for diverse strategies, or newer, flexible systems that let you create unique character combinations, each one also features an engaging open world to discover.
10. Enshrouded
A Very Open Skill Tree Which Gives Players Freedom

Enshrouded is a new fantasy RPG that’s quickly become popular. What sets its character classes apart is the incredible freedom they offer. While you can focus on specific skills, you’re not limited to a single path. You can mix and match abilities from different specializations, allowing for hundreds of unique character builds.
The game rewards players for experimenting with different combinations of skills, as these hybrid builds often prove more effective than focusing on just one specialization. Players have a lot of options to choose from, including roles like Assassin, Ranger, Beastmaster, Healer, Wizard, and Warrior, as well as more versatile combinations like Battlemage, Trickster, Survivor, Tank, and Athlete.
9. Dragon Age: Inquisition
Lead Your Warriors, Mages, and Rogues to Glory
Dragon Age: Inquisition features three core classes – Warrior, Rogue, and Mage – but offers a lot of customization within each. You can develop a character in many different ways. For instance, a Rogue could become a skilled archer who also excels at traps and poisons, or a Mage could focus on anything from healing allies to raising the dead.
What makes this game stand out, especially with its team-based battles, is how well the different character classes and skills work together. Combining the attacks of Mages and Warriors, for example, can be incredibly powerful, and it’s really enjoyable to try out various team setups and tactics to defeat enemies. Plus, the game boasts one of the most compelling stories in the series, with complex political and relationship dynamics.
8. Guild Wars 2
Some Incredible Classes and Unique Races in a Beautiful Game World
Guild Wars 2 is a top-tier MMO for me, largely because of its diverse selection of classes and races. Beyond its fantastic fantasy world, the game boasts a combat system that’s both easy to learn and incredibly enjoyable.
The game offers nine classes, each with many different ways to specialize. You can combine any of the five races with any class, letting you create unique and unpredictable character builds. I especially like playing as a Warrior paired with the Asura race – it’s hilarious to see such a tiny, adorable creature powerfully swing a huge hammer!
7. Cyberpunk 2077
Slash, Shoot, or Hack Your Way Through the Future
Cyberpunk 2077 doesn’t have typical character classes, but it offers a massive selection of skills, technology, and weapons. This allows players to create incredibly unique and focused characters. You can be a stealthy hacker who defeats enemies remotely, a fast-paced samurai wielding a fiery blade, or a heavily armored combat specialist – the game has a playstyle for everyone.
One of the best things about this flexible system is how easily you can change your approach. Want to be a deadly sniper who’s also skilled in close combat? You can do that. Prefer using pistols but need a powerful shotgun for a specific task? No problem. The game doesn’t lock you into any particular build, though some skills will naturally be more helpful than others depending on how you like to play.
6. Wartales
Command a Band of Rogues and Warriors on an Epic Open World Adventure
Wartales stands out for its detailed character system. Beyond the nine core classes – with more added through downloadable content – characters can learn twelve different professions. These professions let them gain useful skills like lockpicking, cooking, and blacksmithing, adding depth to your party’s abilities.
Wartales doesn’t have traditional fantasy classes or special powers, as it aims for a more grounded, realistic medieval world. However, there’s still a good amount of character variety, and you’ll need it to master the game’s strategic turn-based battles. The different classes and professions make each character feel individual and well-developed, enhancing the overall experience.
5. Dragon’s Dogma 2
A Fan-Favourite Skill System
I was so hyped for the sequel to Dragon’s Dogma, and honestly, it blew me away! It’s more than just a pretty game with awesome-looking bosses, though those are great. What really stands out is how they handled the class system – you can level up exactly the skills you want, and then switch to a totally different class without having to start all over. It’s brilliant!
The most exciting part of the game comes from combining different character classes. By using Augments – which give your character permanent boosts – you’ll rapidly transform from a weak beginner into a formidable warrior throughout Vermund and Battahl.
4. Baldur’s Gate 3
Every Decision Will Have Its Consequences
Baldur’s Gate 3 is considered one of the best fantasy role-playing games released recently, and for good reason. It’s built on the classic rules of Dungeons & Dragons and features a compelling story brought to life by fantastic voice acting. The game’s world is incredibly detailed, and your choices truly matter, leading to significant consequences.
First, you’ll choose a character class, and this choice has a big impact on how characters in the game world react to you – potentially more so than in previous role-playing games. With 12 main classes and up to 48 specializations, you can create a truly unique character each time you play. Plus, you can even combine classes for even more customization options.
3. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Every Dragonborn is Unique
Skyrim remains one of the most immersive and influential games ever made, giving players incredible freedom to explore and play how they want. Compared to older games like Oblivion, it moved away from strict character classes and introduced powerful new magic and dragon shouts. This allowed for much more diverse gameplay – you’re not limited to just being a sneaky archer if you don’t want to be!

Skyrim’s various magic schools – like Illusion, Destruction, Restoration, and Conjuration – allow for incredibly diverse character types, ranging from powerful undead masters to peaceful healers. The game offers a lot of flexibility to experiment with different skills, but consistent practice is key to leveling up and fully unlocking their potential.
2. Diablo 4
Take It to the Demons of Hell
While some fans have criticisms of Diablo 4 compared to older games, its open world is a significant improvement. The Diablo series is already famous for its diverse and enjoyable classes, and playing with friends is even better when those classes are well-rounded and offer different playstyles.
So, in Diablo 4, you’ve got five classes to pick from at the start, and they all play really differently – different skills, different gear, the whole nine yards. They even threw in a sixth class, the Spiritborn, with the ‘Vessel of Hatred’ update, which was awesome. But get this – they’re planning on adding two more classes – the Paladin and the Warlock – in the next big DLC, ‘Lords of Hatred’! I can’t wait to try them all out.
1. World of Warcraft
The Godfather of Class-Based Open Worlds
World of Warcraft has been incredibly influential – it’s difficult to picture the current gaming landscape without it. The game first gained popularity thanks to its diverse class system, letting players create truly unique characters. While Warcraft has grown into a huge franchise, the original game remains popular, with around 8 to 9 million people playing each month.
Today, players can choose from thirteen distinct classes, and each class offers at least three different specializations. Whether you prefer a durable, defensive playstyle like the Paladin, or a powerful, offensive one like the Warlock, there are lots of ways to customize your character. That’s why many players enjoy creating several different characters to experience everything the game has to offer.
