The show really takes its time to build both Yui’s powers and her personality over the two seasons, and it starts to unravel some bigger mysteries about the Correctors themselves. Honestly, you don’t see many magical girl anime that blend technology and giant robot-style elemental suits, which is a shame it’s not super well-known. It really deserves more attention!

And even if you don’t watch anything else, you absolutely need to hear the opening theme – it’s incredibly catchy and deserves more recognition!

I’ve noticed a real surge in magical girl anime over the past couple of decades, especially in the 2000s and 2010s. Shows like Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Magical Girl Raising Project really took center stage and became incredibly popular. It’s a shame, though, because other great series like Yuki Yuna is a Hero didn’t quite get the same level of attention.
First released in 2014, Yuki Yuna is a Hero has offered several seasons with cleverly arranged, non-linear stories. Though it initially appears similar to Madoka Magica, it quickly establishes itself as something truly unique and worthwhile.
The anime follows Yuki Yuna and her friends in the school’s Hero Club. They have the opportunity to become real heroes when they’re transported to another dimension to fight monsters called Vertex.
The story starts as a hopeful adventure, but takes a troubling turn when Yuki and her friends discover that using their magic comes at a terrible price – they begin to lose pieces of themselves, like their ability to speak, their sight, or even parts of their bodies. This introduces a dark, sacrificial aspect to the magical girl elements of Yuki Yuna is a Hero, and makes you wonder if the girls’ efforts are truly worth such a high cost.
Princess Tutu Presents A Fantastical Fairy Tale That Uses Dance As Its Superpower
Many magical girl anime feature ordinary girls suddenly gaining amazing powers. What sets Princess Tutu apart is that the main character, Ahiru, begins the story as a duck! She then transforms into a girl, which is already unexpected, and goes on to become even more powerful as Princess Tutu.
Princess Tutu is immediately striking for its unique creative choices. Instead of focusing on violent fights, the show uses beautiful ballet as Princess Tutu’s primary method for overcoming the monsters in her path. While it still includes episodic monster encounters, the series is more interested in its complex, multi-layered story and surprising plot twists. Princess Tutu is a truly special combination of classic fairy tale elements and magical girl themes, and it’s unfortunate that its release during a time of many experimental anime caused it to be overlooked.
Mysterious Thief Saint Tail Celebrates King-Hearted Capers With A Phantom Thief Prodigy
Magical girls gain their powers from many sources, ranging from the ordinary to the extraordinary. The ’90s anime Mysterious Thief Saint Tail is a unique example, drawing inspiration from classic stories like Robin Hood and Detective Conan, with a touch of Cat’s Eye thrown into the mix.
During the day, Meimi Haneoka is a typical middle school student. But at night, she transforms into Phantom Thief Saint Tail, a hero who uses her skills as a performer and magician to pull off daring heists for good. Although she always acts with good intentions and a strong moral code, her activities still attract unwanted attention.
I absolutely adore Mysterious Thief Saint Tail! What I love most is how it takes the magical girl genre and grounds it with genuinely clever mysteries and really well-planned heists. Plus, the slow-burn romance between Meimi and Asuka Jr. is so good! It’s a shame it hasn’t stayed as popular as it deserves, especially with the English dub being unfinished and the manga being hard to find these days. It really feels like a hidden gem!
