Windrose is primarily a survival game, but it also features challenging boss battles on various islands. As you advance through the story, you’ll encounter and need to defeat powerful bosses, starting with Thomas Richards.
Thomas Richards can be a tough boss, particularly if you’re playing alone. He’s powerful, moves quickly, and can defeat you fast if you aren’t prepared. However, there are strategies to help you win! Here’s a guide to defeating Richards in Windrose.
Preparing for the Thomas Richards Battle

Before challenging Thomas Richards, it’s important to get ready. Preparing beforehand will boost your health, reduce the damage you take, and increase your attack power.
To maximize your health, use the food buff limit of two items. This lets you withstand more damage from Richards before you need to heal. A good strategy is to eat a small snack, like cayenne peppers or bananas, followed by a larger meal to get both health boosts.
Next, think about the weapon you’re using. While you can defeat this boss with any weapon, the Sturdy Rapier is a particularly good choice. It makes the timing for perfect parries easier, which can be a big help if you’re struggling with the parry timings.
The Crusher is a strong weapon, and I recommend it for characters focused on strength. It has a chance to knock enemies off balance, which is especially helpful against bosses. Knocking a boss down creates an opening to deal extra damage or recover health.
No matter which weapon you pick, upgrade it to level five before the boss fight – that’s the maximum level you can reach before facing it. Also, you won’t be able to get iron ore until after you’ve won.
Next, it’s important to have good armor. Even better, try to wear a complete set of armor to get the extra benefits it provides. Here are a few armor sets I suggest for this battle:
- Conquistador’s Armor Set: Two pieces will increase damage resistance by 15%.
- Flibustier’s Armor Set: Two pieces make it so attacks consume 20% less stamina. Four pieces increase your one-handed weapon by 15%.
- Privateer’s Armor Set: Two pieces increase your critical hit chance by 10%.
I recently fought Thomas Richards, and I had a really effective armor setup! I mixed and matched – I wore two pieces from the Flibustier’s Armor Set and two from the Conquistador’s Armor Set. It was awesome because it let me attack without getting as tired, and I could take a lot more damage before going down. Definitely helped me win!
Don’t forget to use your alchemy skills to make potions! Stock up on health potions – a full stack of ten is a good idea. Also, craft some Elixirs of Cruelty. They’ll increase your damage by 8%, which is a helpful boost, and each one should last throughout the entire boss fight.
Keep in mind, you will need plenty of clay to use for crafting bottles to contain your elixirs.
Thomas Richards Attacks
Thomas Richard is a challenging boss with several attacks. He wields a large club with significant reach, so it’s best to maintain distance, especially when trying to heal.
| Attack | Description | Best Method to Handle it |
|---|---|---|
| Double Swing | Thomas will swing his club horizontally in both directions. | It is best to parry both attacks. |
| Triple Swing | Thomas will swing his club horizontally three times. | Best to parry or dodge. |
| Overhead Swing | A red glint will appear before Thomas swings his club down vertically. | Cannot be parried, so it is best to dodge. |
| Charge & Grab | Thomas will charge you. A red glint will appear in his hand. If grabbed, he will throw you to the ground and stomp on you, dealing heavy damage. | Cannot be parried, so it is best to dodge forward or sideways. |
| Bombs | Thomas will throw out a barrage of bombs around the arena. | Run away from the bombs before they explode. |
Thomas Richards Strategy
Thomas Richards attacks frequently, but he relies heavily on his double and triple swings. The best way to fight him is to parry these attacks, which will gradually break down his defenses and eventually leave him open to a stun.
Sometimes, Thomas swings from above. If you see a red flash during this attack, it means you can’t block it. Instead, quickly dodge to either the left or right to avoid it.

Thomas doesn’t use his grabbing attack very much when you’re nearby, so staying close can help you avoid it. If he does try to grab you, watch for a red flash and quickly move forward to dodge. When he throws bombs, run to the side of the arena to get out of the blast radius.
At the start of the battle, move close to Thomas and be ready to block his strikes. After he attacks, quickly get in two or three hits of your own, then get back into a defensive position to block his next attack. The Sturdy Rapier is a particularly good weapon to use for this fight because it makes blocking much easier.
Focus on landing a few attacks, then immediately get ready to defend. Keep repeating this pattern throughout the fight, and avoid overextending your attacks. Attacking too often will leave you vulnerable and unable to block.
I wouldn’t advise using a gun in this fight. If you create some distance, Thomas will probably try to grab you, and that attack is harder to avoid than his regular swing.
