Over the past ten years, we’ve seen a surge in live-action remakes of classic animated films, and they often become major blockbuster hits. For example, Disney recently released a live-action version of Lilo & Stitch, which came out in 2002, and it quickly became one of the year’s top five highest-grossing movies. Other studios are following suit – Universal and Dreamworks remade How to Train Your Dragon with a live-action cast last year, and it earned over $100 million more at the box office than the original animated film.
Disney will continue making live-action adaptations of its animated classics, starting this year with Moana, which will feature Dwayne Johnson returning as Maui and introduce Catherine Maga’ala as the young princess. Next year will see a live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon 2 with the original cast and Cate Blanchett reprising her voice role as Valka. Now, Disney has confirmed another remake is in the works, based on a story that first gained popularity over thirty years ago.
I just heard some exciting news for anyone who grew up loving FernGully! Amazon MGM Studios is actually making a live-action remake of the original 1992 film. What’s even cooler is Marielle Heller – she’s directing and wrote the script! A lot of talented people are producing it too, including Stacey Sher, Susan Ursitti-Sheinberg, Jon Sheinberg, Matt Feige, and Heller herself, along with Leah Holer. Moonli Sigha is joining as an executive producer, which sounds promising. I’m really curious to see how they bring that vibrant world to life!

Jon Sheinberg shared his excitement about the movie, explaining that they aren’t just aiming to create another film, but to pay tribute to the original classic and share its enduring story and music with new audiences. Currently, the cast for this live-action remake hasn’t been announced.
The story follows Crysta, a fairy who lives in the Australian rainforest of FernGully. She’s never encountered a human, believing they no longer exist, until a logging company threatens her home. She accidentally shrinks a logger named Zak Young, and he witnesses the destruction his company is causing. Together, Crysta and Zak work to stop the logging and defeat Hexxus, a villain powered by pollution.
The 1992 movie boasted an amazing cast of voice actors popular at the time, like the late Robin Williams as Batty Koda, Christian Slate as Pips, and the comedic pair Cheech and Chong (Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong) as Stump and Root. Tim Curry, an Emmy and Grammy winner, truly shined as the villain, Hexxus, and quickly became a beloved character with fans.
Amazon MGM Studios hasn’t announced who will star in the movie or when it will be released, but it’s going to be a huge project. Given the studio’s success with live-action adaptations of animated series, like the new Masters of the Universe film, this movie has the potential to be truly spectacular.
