Walmart is completely changing the look of its most popular store-brand products. Customer feedback revealed people didn’t like how the packaging appeared in their homes, so Walmart is giving it a makeover.
The store announced that its Great Value brand will get a fresh new look starting in May – it’s the first big packaging update in over ten years. Around 10,000 products, including milk, snacks, and frozen foods, will feature the new design. Prices and the products themselves will stay the same.
Walmart is updating the packaging of its products, starting with snacks. They plan to eventually include cereals, dairy, and other everyday items. The company estimates it will take 18 to 24 months to complete the changes across all products.
Walmart redesigns Great Value as private labels grow
Great Value is the most popular store brand in America, with 87% of households having purchased something from the brand in the last year, as reported by Numerator. Walmart also owns the five best-selling private-label brands across the country.
Even though Walmart is a leader in the market, the company believes people still have a certain impression of its products. According to David Hartman, Walmart’s vice president of creative, customers appreciate the quality and affordability, but feel the packaging doesn’t match those positive aspects.
According to Hartman, customers saw the product as a decent, but not exceptional, choice. They appreciated its quality and usefulness for everyday items, but weren’t excited to showcase it in their homes or share it with family.

The new design uses brighter colors and simpler labels to help customers easily find what they need, whether they’re shopping in a store or online. Walmart also expects these changes to speed up the process of filling customers’ online grocery orders.
I’m really noticing how much more seriously grocery stores are taking their own brands lately! It feels like everyone – Amazon, Costco, Trader Joe’s – is becoming known for quality in-house products, and now Aldi is popping up everywhere, making the competition even fiercer. It’s great for us shoppers, but it’s definitely pushing these stores to step up their game with their own labels.
Walmart is now appealing to a wider range of customers, including those with higher incomes (over $100,000 a year). They’re doing this by offering more delivery choices and introducing new store brands like Bettergoods, which features popular and plant-based items.
The company is also considering adding sushi bars, staffed with employees who would prepare fresh sushi daily.
